Madeleine Morissette Tardif was born in Gravelbourg on August 31, 1929. Her parents, Pantaléon Morissette and Blanche Réhel had just moved to Gravelbourg that summer, coming from Rimouski by train.
Madeleine first attended school at Bekker school when her parents farmed 9 miles north of Gravelbourg. When her mother Blanche died, Madeleine was only 13 years old. Her father asked her if she wanted to be a boarder at the convent or live at Berthe’s (her sister and family.) Madeleine chose Berthe Lemyre. She studied at the convent and graduated in 1949. With a book, she taught herself typing and shorthand. She worked as a receptionist for Dr Morin for 4 years. Then she worked at admissions at St Joseph’s Hospital for 2 years. After that she worked at the Toronto-Dominion Bank for 15 years.
Between 1972 and 1987 she worked for Crop Insurance.
Madeleine would surprise us: she bought her first car, a used white car, and learned to drive after. On February 4, 1989, she married Edmond Tardif from Ferland. Edmond was a widower and had two living sons, Leonard who lived in Alberta and Marcel and family who lived on the family farm in Ferland. Later, Marcel and Mary moved to Swift Current.
When Madeleine married she joined a large and loving family, with many sisters and brothers in law. She and Edmond enjoyed playing cards, cooking, traveling, visiting family and friends. Faith was an important part of their life and God was first. Madeleine was a faithful member of the CWL, a committed supporter of ProLife and a staunch supporter of seminarians. Madeleine and Edmond lived happily together for 5 years when Edmond contracted lung cancer. Madeleine cared for him with love and devotion.
After Edmond died, Madeleine lived in apartments and in March 2004, she moved to the Villa. In 2021, Madeleine moved to Foyer D’Youville. She was glad and grateful for the kind care she received there. She passed away on March 7, 2026 after having received the Last Rites by Father from Ponteix. Her stepson, Marcel, and his wife, Mary, were there. Thanks to Alexis and to MESSENGER, her niece Claudette was able to follow the prayer from Quebec.
To us, her nieces and nephews, Madeleine was a pillar of light. We are grateful to the Lord for having given her to us for 96 blessed years! A Funeral Mass for Madeline will take place Friday, March 13, 2026, 2:00 p.m. at Our Lady of the Assumption Co-Cathedral in Gravelbourg, Saskatchewan. Interment at the Gravelbourg Roman Catholic Cemetery, Gravelbourg, Saskatchewan. Donations in memory of Madeleine to the Our Lady of the Assumption Co-Cathedral P.O.
