Obituary of Hilda Mayer-Roszell

Hilda Tina (Kilbach) Mayer-Roszell passed away peacefully on June 11, 2025, at the Foyer D’Youville in Gravelbourg at the age of 94.

Hilda was born on July 14, 1930, on the family farm (SW 16-11-6 W3rd) in the Bateman area. She was the fifth of nine children born to Philip and Eva Kilbach. She attended Arland School near Bateman, and studied German at church on Saturdays. At the age of 15, she began her first job working for the Charbonneau family in Gravelbourg. Hilda later began a fulfilling career as a nursing assistant at St. Joseph Hospital, where she was deeply loved by both staff and patients for her compassionate care.

On April 14, 1950, Hilda married the love of her life, Rudy Mayer, at Peace Lutheran Church in Bateman. Together, they raised four children: Barry (1951), Janice (1952), Holly (1956), and Miles (1960). Their life was grounded in faith, and they were actively involved in the Lutheran Church in both Bateman and Gravelbourg. Hilda was a committed member of the Lutheran Women’s League, loved singing in church and community choirs, and faithfully taught Sunday School for many years.

Hilda and Rudy shared a love for travel and spent many winters enjoying the warmth of Yuma. Sadly, Rudy passed away on July 9, 1993, at the age of 75.

Family was everything to Hilda. She found immense joy in spending time with her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. She treasured the strong bond she shared with her siblings and their families, often gathering to socialize or help each other with tasks like washing walls, butchering chickens, or painting and varnishing in her new house on the farm. Hilda was known for her delicious cooking and baking, especially her perogies, cabbage rolls, donuts, cinnamon rolls, and kuchen. She also enjoyed embroidery and knitting.

After being widowed for nine years, Hilda was blessed to find love again and married Don Roszell in April, 2002. The couple resided in Regina for several years before Don passed away from Alzheimer’s in 2009.  Hilda later returned to her home community, and as her care needs increased, she became a resident at the Foyer d’Youville in 2020. She will be dearly missed.

Hilda is predeceased by her husbands, Rudy Mayer and Don Roszell; her son Barry Mayer; her parents, Philip and Eva Kilbach; her siblings Ruth, Albert, Clarence, Roy, Edna, Elmer, Harold, and Elwood; and Rudy’s siblings Henry, Fred, Wilbert, Alwina, Evelyn, and Irene.

Hilda leaves to cherish her memory her loving family; her daughter-in-law Loretta Mayer; granddaughter Jennifer Mayer (Terrance), great-grandchildren Lekeisha (Colin) and Caleb (Danika), and great-great-grandchildren Hadleigh and Harper; grandson Adam Mayer; daughter Janice (Denis) Bourgeois, granddaughter Jacqueline (Jeff) Pylatuik and great-granddaughter Sarah; grandson Ryan (Kristine) Bourgeois and great-granddaughters Rachel, Emma, and Madaline; daughter Holly (Larry) Penner, granddaughter Amanda Clark (Kurt) and great-grandchildren Joachin, Moses, Rose, and Iris; granddaughter Ashley Upshaw and great-grandchildren Noah, Ezra, and Shiloh; son Miles (Janell) Mayer, grandson Britt Mayer, grandson Tyson (Yuliya) Mayer and great-grandchildren Axton and Anastacia; granddaughter Madison Mayer (Cole) and great grandchildren Piper and Paisley.  Also, her sisters-in-law, Kathy Kilbach, Grace Kilbach, Marguerite Kilbach, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

A Lutheran Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, June 21, 2025, at 2:00 p.m., at Our Lady of the Assumption Co-Cathedral in Gravelbourg with Pastor Doug Shepherd officiating.

Interment: Trinity Lutheran Church Cemetery, St Boswells, SK
