Obituary of Boyd Federink
Boyd Federink passed away peacefully on September 21, 2025, in Saskatoon, SK, at the age of 66.
Boyd was born on August 17, 1959, the only child of Edna and John Federink. On January 1, 1982, Boyd began dating Heather Gavelin, and they later married on May 18, 1985, in McCord, SK. Together they settled in Saskatoon, where they welcomed their two children, Bradley in 1988 and Amanda in 1990. Boyd was later blessed with two beautiful granddaughters, born in 2018 and 2020, who brought him endless joy.
Boyd worked his entire career in the construction industry, proudly obtaining his International Journeyman Carpenter Certificate in his twenties. He was an avid hunter, often heading out with Brad, his nephews, and son-in-law Chris. Growing up, Boyd played any sport he could, including ball, hockey, golf, and curling. After breaking his back in 2018, his days of playing turned into watching and cheering on his favourite teams: the Boston Bruins, Blue Jays, Saskatchewan Roughriders, and Dallas Cowboys. Boyd also loved time with family, or being outside in the garden tending to his garlic crop, or at the smoker, trying out his latest recipe.
In the last few years, Boyd divided his time between McCord and Saskatoon, working odd jobs, helping out at the McCord Transfer Station, being a member of the Glentworth Curling Club, and back home, never missing his granddaughters’ numerous school events and sporting activities.
Boyd is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Heather Federink (née Gavelin); children Bradley Federink and Amanda (Christopher) Harder, granddaughters Norah and Leighton Harder; brother Dave (Ellen); sisters-in-law Pat Klein and Diana Burgess; brother-in-law David (Kim) Gavelin; as well as many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, and countless community members who became family.
Boyd was predeceased by his mother, Edna (Olson) and father, John Federink; mother and father-in-law, Dorothy and Lloyd Gavelin; Klein siblings Joe, Lawrence, Eleanor, Melvin, Elaine, Robert, and Cheryl; sister-in-law Simone Klein; and brother-in-law Ralph Burgess.
Although Boyd’s family wishes for more time with him, his legacy will live on in the cherished memories and stories shared among those who loved him.
A Graveside Service will be held at Mountain View Cemetery in Fir Mountain on October 11, 2025, at 1:00 p.m., followed by a Celebration of Life at 2:00 p.m. in the McCord Memorial Hall. Those attending are encouraged to wear sports memorabilia from one of Boyd’s favourite teams.
Heather, Bradley, Amanda, and Chris extend heartfelt thanks to Dr. Stephen Pylypchuk, Dr. Cody Secord, and to all the friends and family who have stopped by or called in recent days. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation 1738 Quebec Avenue, Unit 26, Saskatoon, SK S7K 1V9 or the Glentworth Curling Club, Box 22, Glentworth, SK S0H 1V0.
