Celebration of Life

A Celebration of Life in Fay's Memory will take place at a later date.

Obituary of Fay Shearer

Anna FAY Shearer passed away peacefully surrounded by family on October 21, 2025, at the Foyer D’Youville Care Home in Gravelbourg, SK.  Fay was born on a farm near Coronation, AB on a very cold February 21, 1936.  So cold in fact, that her midwife (grandmother) put her in a bread box and warmed her by the kitchen stove.  She was the 5th of 9 children of the Glasier clan born to Alma and Leona.  She grew up on the family farm then later moved into the town of Coronation where her parents ran a gas station.  Fay was the best shot in her Cadet Corp (Army) winning a sharpshooting trophy, better in fact than her husband to be.  After high school graduation, she worked as a bank teller in Coronation and Edmonton.  She married Allen Rae Shearer on September 2, 1957, in Coronation, AB.  They started their married life in Swan River, MB, with 11 moves across Manitoba, Ontario and Saskatchewan through Al’s work with the TD bank.  They made many memories and friends along the way.  Fay was skilled at making all the houses a home: warm and welcoming.   Born to them:  Douglas (1958), Kevin (1961), Karen (1963) and Jennifer (1975).

Mom was a quiet keep to herself type.  She loved her close circle of people and her family well.  Her many hobbies kept her busy.  She loved to sew…from tiny Barbie doll and Cabbage Patch doll clothes to patchwork denim quilts, which she donated faithfully to The Moose Jaw Transition House.  The family enjoyed lots of homemade clothes and gifts, including teddy bears pieced from fur coats.  Mom was an avid reader and would often say “you can go anywhere in a book”.   To say mom was a good cook was an understatement…many family gatherings centered around her lasagnas, cabbage rolls, and Wife Saver casseroles. If you were able to taste some of mom’s cinnamon buns or cheesecake, count yourself lucky.  Many of us have tried (and failed) to recreate her bun dough recipe.  Perhaps it was her love that made them perfect.    Nature was important in mom’s life, from bird watching, camping, gardening or simply sitting on the deck with a coffee.  Mom enjoyed her years serving in the Kinettes and Lioness clubs.  She loved to sing and was part of various church choirs through their moves.  Amazing Grace and You Are My Sunshine were among her favourites.  She worked part time as a care aide in the Foyer D’Youville in the early 1990s.  She was a cancer survivor twice over.  Mom and dad both loved antique hunting, auction sales and refinishing furniture.  Some of mom’s favourite memories were her trip to the Dominican Republic and a family reunion on a houseboat on Diefenbaker Lake.  Mom was the mother hen, keeping track of her family and not resting until we were all home, safe and sound.  Dementia began to take its tole on her so in December of 2021 she entered long term care.  Her wit and humour, determination and feistiness, and love for family never left her.

“Death is nothing at all.  I have only slipped away into the next room.  Play, smile, think of me…I am waiting for you…just around the corner…All is well.  Be happy.” Fay Shearer

Fay is survived by her husband of 68 years, Al, who is glad he had to courage to stand up and ask that pretty red head for a dance.  She is survived by her children: son Doug (Donna): Chris, Kaylo and Quinn, Beverly (Clint), Camden; son Kevin (Sheri): Paul (Cynthia), Jessica (Carter), Quinten; daughter Karen Hazell (Garry): Karisa, (Jason), Wyatt, Chloe and Emmett; Marley (Daniel); Stefanie (Adam): Liam and Oliver; daughter Jen Filson (Shel): Kaylee and Keegan.  Brother Bill (Marietta) Glasier, Sister in laws Sally Glasier, Marlene Tiegs and Brother-in-law Bert Shearer, along with numerous nieces and nephews.

Fay was predeceased by her parents, Alma and Leona (Neal) Glasier, and her husband’s parents Harry and Muriel (Broughton) Shearer. Her siblings: Ed (Edna) Glasier, Edith (Archie) Laird, Rose (Archie) Sorge, Janet McCaig, David (Wilma) Glasier, Arlene (Wayne) Fisher, and George Glasier, her brother-in-law Art Tiegs and sister-in-law Maxine Shearer.

The family are planning a celebration of life to be held sometime in the spring of 2026.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to the Moose Jaw Transition House Box 1866 Moose Jaw, SK S6H 7N6 or The Alzheimer Society in Canada 20 Eglinton Avenue West, 16th Floor Toronto, ON M4R 1K8 https://alzheimersocietyinmemoriam.ca in her memory.
