Obituary of Don Haubrich

Donald Anton Haubrich, age 88, passed away peacefully on December 15, 2025, at Cypress House in Swift Current.

Donald was born on April 12, 1937, on the family farm, the youngest child of Frank and Elizabeth Haubrich. Farming was his life’s work and passion, and he took great pride in the land he cared for throughout the years.

He attended Norfolk School until Grade 7 and attended Hodgeville School where he graduated. In 1964, Don continued his education at the Vocational Agriculture School at the University of Saskatchewan, where he was recognized for achieving the top marks in his class—an early sign of his strong work ethic and sharp mind. During this time he made the choice to come home and help his family with the farm.

Donald loved to travel and was the instigator of planning many adventures with close friends, traveling extensively throughout Europe and many places throughout the United States. These trips created lifelong memories and friendships that he treasured.

In 1981, Donald married the love of his life Inga Sabine. As his father-in-law once said, “He became a husband, dad, and grandpa all at once—and he accepted it wholeheartedly.” Family meant everything to Donald. He loved being a stepdad, grandpa, and great-grandpa, and took immense joy in time spent with his family.

To his grandchildren, Donald was affectionately known as “Smartie Grandpa,” always making sure they were never without a box of Smarties and a good laugh. His quick wit, love of jokes, and ability to make people smile were hallmarks of his personality.

Donald was proud of his small-town roots and deeply connected to his community. He grew beautiful roses and always enjoyed sharing them with friends and neighbours, a simple but meaningful expression of his kindness and generosity.

A lifelong sports fan, Donald enjoyed all sports but was especially devoted to the St. Louis Cardinals, Roughriders and the Toronto Maple Leafs. Whether watching a game or sharing a story, he had a way of bringing people together.

Donald and Inga spent more than 25 winters traveling to Mesa, where they built lasting friendships and enjoyed an active lifestyle. Their days were filled with golfing, bowling, and time spent with their winter friends.

Donald will be remembered for his warmth, humour, generosity, and deep love for family and community. His legacy lives on in the land he farmed, the roses he shared, the laughter he spread, and the family who loved him so dearly.

Don is survived by his loving family, stepdaughter Brenda Deobald; grandson Mike (Calista) Deobald, great-grandchildren Jake and Kayla; granddaughter Heather Deobald (Jesse Bergen), great grandchildren Ty, Beckhem and Nate; granddaughter Jennifer Deobald (Bryce Fossum), great-grandchildren Katie, Beau and Tilly; stepson Jerry (Kim) Sabine and grandson Lane.

Donald was predeceased by his wife, Inga Haubrich; son-in-law Dwaine Deobald. parents, Frank and Elizabeth;  sisters Ann (Royden) Glenn, Betty Haubrich, Emily (Harry) Wilinsky and brothers Frank Haubrich, Mike Haubrich.

The family would like to thank all of the staff at Cypress House in Swift Current who were involved in Donald’s care.

A Funeral Service for Don will be held on Saturday, December 15, 2025 at 1:00 pm, at St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church, Hodgeville, SK.  Interment will follow at St. Joseph Roman Catholic Cemetery.
