Obituary of Colette Chabot (née Liboiron)

Colette Chabot,93 years of age, passed away on December 19, 2025 at the Dr. F. H. Wigmore Regional Hospital in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan surrounded by her two children, Angèle and Arthur.

Colette (née Liboiron) Chabot was born on October 1, 1932 in Ponteix, Saskatchewan, the youngest child of Régina and Donat Liboiron. She was predeceased by one sister and six brothers.

Her childhood was marked by the Great Depression and the Second World War. While helping with the dishes, Colette and her mother prayed for her brother, Réal, a Major in the 22nd Regiment of the Canadian Army, to return safely from the war. Every evening, the family gathered to pray.

From a young age, she knew she wanted to be a nurse as she liked taking care of others. In 1952, Colette was accepted as a nurse-in-training at the Grey Nuns Hospital in Regina. She was determined to spend her life caring for the sick, and to her final day, her goal in life was to take care of others. After graduating and receiving her degree as a registered nurse, she was employed at Fort San, a sanitarium for tuberculosis. She also worked at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Gravelbourg, Gabriel Hospital in Ponteix and Mankota Hospital.

Being a nurse was a calling, not a job, for Colette Chabot. She was happy to go to work dressed in her white nurse's uniform, ready to care for her patients. She was an attentive, helpful, and dedicated nurse focused on the overall well-being of her patients, not only their physical needs, but also their emotional, social and spiritual needs. Her career as a nurse unfortunately ended in 1986 as a result of two strokes.

In October 1962, Colette married Viateur Chabot, in Ponteix, Saskatchewan. They raised their two children, Angèle and Arthur, in Ferland, Saskatchewan. Her husband was a farmer, and Colette helped him by driving the grain truck, preparing meals, doing the bookkeeping as well as filling out government forms. She continued to work as a nurse while helping with the farm.

Colette and Viateur were married for almost 32 years. They were very involved in the community of Ferland, enjoyed playing cards with relatives and travelled with their children in their motorhome to various destinations in Canada and the United States. In 1994, Viateur succumbed to cancer. His passing was a painful and challenging time for her, but her faith and family helped her overcome this difficult time.

After her husband's death, she went on many trips and cruises with her children. In 1994, they visited Hawaii. With her daughter Angèle, she explored the Holy Land. Another trip took her to France to visit Lourdes and Mont Saint-Michel. Later, she enjoyed going on cruises. She was delighted to go on a Mediterranean cruise in 2008 with her children and her daughter-in-law to discover Ephesus, Rome, and the Vatican.

In 2004, Angèle moved in with her mother in the family home and cared for her for over 15 years. The two were involved with the local church and would share vegetables from their garden with the community.

One of Colette’s greatest joys was to be “Grand-mère” to her two grandsons. She really enjoyed playing cards or board games with them. Another favourite activity was to play catch by throwing stuffed toys back and forth with them. Every time they came to see her, she would always ask how they were doing and listened attentively to their responses. She loved them dearly as evidenced by her words and actions.

Colette will be lovingly remembered. Her warmth, selflessness, unwavering faith in God, and deep love for her family remind us of her greatest qualities. She was very devout and religious, saying her rosary every day. She always wanted to help her family and told them often she loved them. At the end of her life, she had a blanket with a heart on it. She would point to herself, then to the heart on the blanket, and finally would open her arms to show the magnitude of her love.

Colette (Liboiron) Chabot is survived by her daughter Angèle, son Arthur (Joanne), her two grandchildren, Henri and Vincent, her sister-in-law Lauriette MacMullin, her cousin Viateur Pagé as well as numerous nephews and nieces.

She was predeceased by her husband Viateur Chabot, her siblings Réal, Léo, Lucienne and Henri and numerous brothers-in-law as well as sisters-in-law.

The family sincerely thanks all the staff at the Mankota Prairie View Health Centre who provided loving care to Colette from 2023 to 2025 as well as the staff at the Dr. F. H. Wigmore Regional Hospital in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan who cared for her during her last days. A Funeral Service for Colette Chabot was held on Saturday, December 27, 2025 at St. Jean Baptiste Roman Catholic Church, Ferland, Saskatchewan. Interment followed at the Ferland Catholic Cemetery. Memorial donations in Colette’s memory can be given to the St. Jean Baptiste Roman Catholic Church in Ferland, Saskatchewan.

Colette (née Liboiron) Chabot est née le 1er octobre 1932 à Ponteix, en Saskatchewan. Elle était la plus jeune de Régina et Donat Liboiron. Elle avait une soeur et six frères, tous décédés avant elle.

Son enfance a été marquée par la Grande Dépression et la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Tout en aidant à faire la vaisselle, Colette et sa mère priaient pour le retour sain et sauf de son frère, Réal, major au 22e Régiment de l'Armée canadienne. Chaque soir, la famille se réunissait pour prier.

Elle savait, dès son jeune âge, qu'elle voulait être infirmière, car elle aimait prendre soin des autres. En 1952, Colette a commencé ses études pour être infirmière à l'hôpital des Soeurs Grises de Regina. Après avoir obtenu son degré d'infirmière, elle a travaillé à Fort San, un sanatorium pour les personnes atteintes de la tuberculose. Elle a également travaillé à l'hôpital St. Joseph de Gravelbourg, à l'hôpital Gabriel de Ponteix et à l'hôpital de Mankota.

Être infirmière était une vocation, et non un travail pour Colette Chabot. Elle était heureuse de se rendre au travail vêtue de son uniforme blanc, prête à prendre soin de ses patients. Infirmière attentive, dévouée et bienveillante, elle se souciait du bien-être global de ses patients, prenant en compte non seulement leurs besoins physiques, mais aussi leurs besoins émotionnels, sociaux et spirituels. Sa carrière d'infirmière prit malheureusement fin en 1986, suite à deux accidents vasculaires cérébraux.

En octobre 1962, Colette a épousé Viateur Chabot à Ponteix, en Saskatchewan. Ils élevèrent leurs deux enfants, Angèle et Arthur, à Ferland, Saskatchewan. Son mari était agriculteur et Colette l'aidait en conduisant le camion à grains, en préparant les repas, en s’occupant de la tenue de livres et en remplissant les formulaires du gouvernement. Elle continuait de travailler comme infirmière tout en aidant à la ferme.

Colette et Viateur ont été mariés pendant près de 32 ans. Très impliqués dans la vie communautaire de Ferland, ils aimaient jouer aux cartes avec leurs proches et voyageaient avec leurs enfants en motorhome à différentes destinations au Canada et aux États-Unis.

En 1994, Viateur a succombé à un cancer. Son décès fut une épreuve douloureuse et difficile pour elle, Après le décès de son mari, elle a fait de nombreux voyages et croisières avec ses enfants. En 1994, ils se sont rendus à Hawaï. Avec sa fille Angèle, elle a exploré la Terre Sainte. Un autre voyage l'a amené en France pour visiter Lourdes et le Mont-Saint-Michel. Plus tard, elle est devenue une habituée des croisières. Elle était ravie de partir en croisière en Méditerranée en 2008 avec ses enfants et sa belle-fille pour découvrir Éphèse, Rome et le Vatican.

En 2004, Angèle est venue vivre avec sa mère dans la maison familiale et s'est occupée d'elle pendant plus de 15 ans. Toutes deux étaient impliquées dans la vie de l'église locale et partageaient les légumes de leur jardin avec la communauté.

L'une des plus grandes joies de Colette était d'être grand-mère pour ses deux petits-fils. Elle adorait jouer aux cartes ou à des jeux de société avec eux. Elle aimait aussi beaucoup jouer à se lancer des peluches. Chaque fois qu'ils venaient la voir, elle leur demandait comment ils allaient et écoutait attentivement leurs réponses. Ses paroles et ses gestes témoignaient de son amour profond pour ses deux petits-fils.

Nombreuses sont les qualités de Colette: Sa chaleur, son don de soi, sa foi inébranlable en Dieu et son amour profond pour sa famille ne sont que quelques-unes. Très pieuse et religieuse, elle récitait son chapelet tous les jours. Elle voulait toujours aider sa famille et leur disait souvent qu'elle les aimait. À la fin de sa vie, elle avait une couverture avec un coeur. Elle se désignait du doigt, puis le coeur sur la couverture, et enfin ouvrait les bras pour exprimer l’ampleur de son amour pour sa famille.

Colette (née Liboiron) Chabot laisse dans le deuil sa fille Angèle, son fils Arthur (Joanne), ses deux petits-enfants, Henri et Vincent, sa belle-soeur Lauriette MacMullin, son cousin Viateur Pagé ainsi que de nombreux neveux et nièces.

Son époux, Viateur Chabot, ses frères et soeurs, Réal, Léo, Lucienne et Henri, ainsi que plusieurs beaux-frères et belles-soeurs l’ont précédée dans la tombe.

La famille tient à remercier chaleureusement tout le personnel du Centre de santé Mankota Prairie View qui a prodigué d’excellents soins à Colette de 2023 à 2025, ainsi que le personnel de l’Hôpital régional Dr F. H. Wigmore de Moose Jaw, en Saskatchewan, qui l’a accompagnée durant ses derniers jours.

Les funérailles de Colette Chabot ont eu lieu le samedi 27 décembre 2025 à l'église Saint-Jean-Baptiste de Ferland, en Saskatchewan. L’enterrement a suivi au cimetière catholique de Ferland. Les dons en la mémoire de Colette peuvent être adressés à l'église Saint-Jean-Baptiste de Ferland, en Saskatchewan mais sa foi et sa famille l'aidèrent à surmonter cette période douloureuse.
