Obituary of Kay Richards
Kay Richards passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 18, 2026, at the Ross Payant Centennial Home in Assiniboia, Saskatchewan, surrounded by the deep love of her family.
Kay was born on October 17, 1942, in Shaunavon, Saskatchewan, the youngest of three daughters born to Mike and Anne (Prada) Mickaliuk. She grew up in Maxstone, where her father worked as the section foreman, and attended school there from Grades 1–8 before completing high school in Assiniboia.
In her younger years, Kay worked as a teller at Glauser’s Department Store and later at the Co-op Grocery Store. On March 5, 1960, she married the love of her life, Richard “Dick” Richards. Together they built a life grounded in love, hard work, and family. They moved a teacherage onto the NE 12-7-2 W3rd in the Stonehenge district, where they lived until 1967, before purchasing and moving to the SW 12-7-2 W3rd. It was there they raised their two children, Wanda and Trent, and created a lifetime of cherished memories. Annual family camping trips at the end of each school year, and family get-togethers in Olds became treasured traditions.
Kay was a devoted wife and a wonderful mother, an exceptional cook whose kitchen was always a place of comfort and welcome. She loved tending her flowers, garden and took pride in a home filled with warmth and care. Kay and Dick were truly a team in every sense of the word.
In the early 1970s, Kay began working at Peavey Mart before fulfilling her entrepreneurial spirit by owning and operating “Jeans and Things” for many years. She also worked part-time at the Tree House each spring. Kay had a keen eye for style and enjoyed shopping, was always impeccably dressed, and even ironed her everyday clothes.
A talented curler, Kay once lost the provincial final by a mere measure, a story told with pride. Curling was the only sport she faithfully watched on television, and she especially enjoyed watching women’s curling.
Kay was adventurous and always game for something new, though not a lover of water, she gamely joined canoe trips to the northern lakes. For a few years, she and Dick house-sat in Red Deer so they could ski more often; during that time, Kay worked at Safeway. Together they travelled widely, visiting nine countries in Europe, exploring Cuba, New York and Costa Rica, travelling through several U.S. states, and spending many winters as snowbirds.
Above all, Kay’s greatest joy was her family. She treasured time with her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and took special care to instill in them the values of etiquette, kindness, and good manners. Her legacy lives on in their lives.
Kay leaves to cherish her memory her beloved husband, Dick Richards; daughter Wanda (Dave) Ogle; grandson David (Christine) and great-grandchildren Hunter, Garrett, and Charlotte; grandson Matt (Teah) and great-grandson James; granddaughter Whitney; son Trent (Tracy) Richards; granddaughter Afton and great-granddaughter Kendall; grandson Lucas (Nicole) and great-grandchildren Archie and Leonora; and her sister Helen.
She was predeceased by her parents, Mike and Annie Mickaliuk, and her sister Jenny.
A Private Family Celebration of Life will be held.
Our family is deeply grateful for the many kind words, and expressions of support. We are truly blessed to call Assiniboia and area home.
