Obituary of LaVerne Verbrugge

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, aunt and sister, LaVerne Verbrugge, on March 1st in Gravelbourg, Saskatchewan, at the age of 79, surrounded by the love of her family.

LaVerne was born on May 25, 1946, to Jack and Frieda Kuntz at the Regina General Hospital. She was the eldest of six children and grew up on the family farm six miles north of Vibank. Farm life helped shape the strong, capable, and independent woman she would become — never afraid of hard work and never one to back down from a challenge.

At 18, she moved to Regina to begin her first job at FW Woolworth as a clerk. In July of 1965, she married Emil Lekach. Together they welcomed their daughter, Cynthia, on August 15, 1965, and their son, Dwayne, on July 10, 1966.

LaVerne later worked at the Army & Navy store in Regina before discovering a career that truly suited her spirit — bartending. She worked at the Hungarian Club and the German Club, where her quick wit, infectious laugh, and natural ability to connect with people made her unforgettable. LaVerne had a wonderful sense of humour and a way of making everyone feel welcome. She was funny, sharp, and could deliver a one-liner at just the right moment.

It was during this time that she met her second husband, Grant Verbrugge, and in 1976, she moved to a farm south of Kincaid. Several years later, she began working at the bar in Hazenmore, eventually moving there in 1984. That same year, she met Mike Dash. She continued working at the Red Coat for 20 years, forming lifelong friendships and becoming a familiar and beloved face in the community. She also dedicated 10 years of service as a care aide at Sunset Care Home, where her kindness and sense of humour brightened the days of the residents. She had a special way of making people feel comfortable, cared for, and often laughing when they needed it most.

LaVerne was a strong and fiercely independent woman who lived life on her own terms. She was stubborn in the very best way — determined, resilient, and never afraid to speak her mind. Her strength carried her through life’s challenges, and her humour carried those around her. She loved deeply, laughed loudly, and left a lasting impression on everyone who knew her. She was always up for a game of cards, a good visit over coffee, or sharing a beer with friends. Whether around a kitchen table or at the bar, she cherished conversation and connection. Above all, she held a strong and steady faith that guided her throughout her life and brought her comfort and strength.

LaVerne was predeceased by her parents, Jack and Frieda Kuntz, and by her brothers, Earl and Kenneth Kuntz.

LaVerne is lovingly survived by her daughter, Cynthia (Darryl); her grandson Spencer (Sara) and great-grandson Cole; her granddaughter Kayla (Cody) and great-grandchildren Knox and Brie. She is also survived by her son, Dwayne (Debbie), and grandsons Eric and Ian. She held a special place in her heart for her honorary granddaughter, Haley.

She is survived by her brother Garry (Betty), nephew Brent (Jona), and great-niece and great-nephew Bella and Jordan; nephew Ryan (Lara) and their children Maraya, Naliyah, and Rylan; her sisters Janice and Elizabeth (Trond), and niece Alexandra. LaVerne also leaves behind many close and cherished friends who meant the world to her.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the compassionate and supportive staff at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Gravelbourg, as well as to Dr. Pillay and Dr. Ramlakhan for the friendship, care, and dedication they showed LaVerne over the many years. The family would also like to sincerely thank Piche-Hawkins-Grondin Funeral Chapel for their kindness, professionalism, and guidance during this difficult time.

A Funeral Mass for LaVerne will be held on Monday, March 9, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. from Ste. Radegonde Roman Catholic Church in Lafleche, Saskatchewan. Father Carlos Jimenez presiding. Cross Bearer: Jona Kuntz. Candle Bearers: Bella Kuntz and Maraya Kuntz. Pall Bearers: Spencer Gross, Kayla Marshall, Ryan Kuntz, Brent Kuntz, Cody Marshall and Bernie Miller.
