Obituary of Sarah Burns
Sarah Burns (nee Martin)
Aug. 19, 1923 – Apr. 15, 2026
The family is sad to announce the passing of Sarah Catherine Burns, aged 102 years of Lafleche, Saskatchewan. Sarah passed peacefully on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, in the company of her children at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Gravelbourg, after suffering a heart attack in her home on Sunday, April 5, 2026.
Sarah was born and raised on the family farm in Ituna, Saskatchewan, to Isaac and Sylvia Martin. She was the second oldest of eight children and worked with her older brother and younger sister doing field work on the farm and helping raise her younger siblings. She met Allan Burns, the love of her life, and they were married on June 30, 1949. They bought a farm in Flintoft, Saskatchewan, and with hard work and a strong partnership, they raised their two children until they retired in 1998, sold the farm, and moved to Lafleche, Saskatchewan, where they enjoyed playing cards and shuffleboard at the Club 50. They also bowled in Meyronne and Gravelbourg. Sarah loved her bowling and was quite proud of her trophies, and never failed to show them off. Sarah enjoyed her neighbours and friends, even more so after Allan passed away in November 2004. She enjoyed embroidery and growing a variety of flowers in her yard, and coffee with her friends.
Sarah was predeceased by her beloved husband Allan in 2004, her brothers Fred, Isaac (Evelyn), Robert, and Jim, her brothers-in-law Wes Wilson and Bill Exley.
Left to cherish in her memory are her children, daughter Shirley (Larry) Kostal, and son Allan Jr. (Denise) Burns. Grandchildren Steve, Erin (Jason), Derek (Paula), and Jared. Great-grandchildren Bennet, David, Owen, Ethan, Alaine, and Halle. Sister Margaret Wilson, Anne (Roy) Burns, Sylvia Exley, and Elaine Gottinger.
The Funeral Service will be held on April 24, 2026, at 1:00 pm at Lafleche United Church. Reverend Janelle Shaw will officiate, and private family internment will take place in the Lafleche Municipal Cemetery.
