Obituary of Berniece Foley

Berniece Irene Foley (née Willford), 97, of Coronach, Saskatchewan, died peacefully on September 6, 2026, surrounded by loved ones. She was born on June 21, 1929, in Scobey, Montana and was the fifth child of Archie and Fern Willford. She married Clarence Foley on September 7, 1949.

Berniece was the mother of 14 children, 36 grandchildren, and 49 great-grandchildren. She grew up in Coronach, moved with her family to Waitville, Saskatchewan during the Great Depression and returned to the family farm in Coronach in 1943. She had seven siblings—four brothers and three sisters—and especially valued sharing a birthday with her sister Edith.

Berniece attended teachers’ college in Moose Jaw in 1947 and taught at Roseland School District in 1948. After marrying Clarence in 1949, the couple welcomed their 14 children between 1950 and 1972— ten girls and four boys, raising them on a farm north of Coronach. Their family life was shaped by Catholic faith, hard work, and devotion to family and friends.

She is remembered for her kind, compassionate spirit, willingness to help others, and ability to build lasting community relationships. She welcomed company, including her children’s friends, who were often made to feel like part of the family.

Berniece enjoyed reading, dancing, hosting guests, playing cards and participating in community organizations, including the Catholic Women’s League of which she was a valued member for 76 years.  Her competitive spirit was passed on to her children and grandchildren.  Chauffeuring duties often included gallon pails full of cookies, much to the delight of all involve.

In 1974, Berniece began a third career as a dietician at the hospital, where she worked for 18 years. After retiring, she traveled extensively with friends and family, continuing a tradition begun by her mother. She also enjoyed watching her grandchildren and great-grandchildren grow.

Her final years were spent at Coronach Health Centre. The family expresses heartfelt appreciation for the loving and compassionate care she received at the facility.

Berniece was predeceased by her husband Clarence, her parents, six siblings, three grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
