Obituary of Edna Heinrichs

Edna Hilda Heinrichs passed away on Saturday, December 3, 2022, at Shaunavon Hospital Care Centre, in Shaunavon, Saskatchewan, at the age of 88 years. Edna was born on January 15, 1934, at the family farm to Adolph and Melita (Stickel) Arnold. She was the fourth child, but the first daughter of fifteen children. She attended Bollingbrooke school for her first eight years of formal education. Edna started packing lunches at a young age for her and seven of her siblings who were also in school. She took grades nine and ten by correspondence. During this time Edna was also responsible for doing housework and tending to the garden to help out. She enjoyed playing softball with the Shamrock Ladies team for several years as well as curling in the ladies bonspiels. In the summer of 1954, the love of her life Levi proposed to Edna. They were married on November 19, 1954, at the United Church in Shamrock, Saskatchewan. They moved into their first house together in Shamrock across from the United Church. The house was 2 bedrooms, partially finished with no power. After two years of living in and fixing up their home, the power was hooked up. They welcomed their four children Raymond, Brian, Chris and Stewart during their time in town. Edna was active in the community, enjoying her work with 4-H and the local Community Club for 24 years. In 1980 she helped edit and gather information to help publish the history of Shamrock and RM 134 in a book entitled “Harvest of Memories.” Throughout the years Edna had kept a detailed diary and later used them to write a detailed account of her and Levi’s life. In October of 1972, Edna and Levi moved to the house they had built on Levi’s family farm. Here they raised chickens, turkeys, geese, cows and even a milk cow for a few years. For many years Edna had an enormous veggie garden and yard. She would can and freeze the produce for family and friends to use during the winter. Most noteworthy are the bushels of cucumbers for pickling, and the peas. During the summer she enjoyed the many visits from her grandchildren. In the winter she kept busy with hobbies such as crocheting afghans, knitting, and doing needlepoint. In 2020, poor health forced Edna and Levi to move off the farm to Chez Nous Care Home in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. Mom missed the farm and there was never a day that she didn’t long for her home there. During her time in Moose Jaw, she was a dedicated member of the SDA Church where she held many positions. Edna is survived by her loving husband Levi of 68 years; son Raymond (Tham), son Brian, daughter Chris (Ian), son Stewart (Barb); grandchildren Kimberly, Dustin, Ashley, Phuoc, Angela, David and James; great-children Leighton, Saige, Clara and William as well as a large extended family. She was predeceased by her parents Adolph and Melita Arnold and seven siblings. A funeral service was held on Friday, December 9, 2022, at 2:00 p.m., at Seventh-Day Adventist Church in Moose Jaw. The eulogy was shared by Chris Ward. Special Memories were shared by Ashely Heinrichs. Edna was laid to rest at the Shamrock Cemetery. Memorial donations to Shamrock Community Hall were greatly appreciated.
