Obituary of Mervin GUILLEMIN

Mervin Alvin Joseph Guillemin of Assiniboia, SK passed away on January 7, 2014, at the age of 54 years. Mervin was born in Fillmore, SK on March 10, 1959, the oldest of four children born to Armand and Edith (nee Kallstrom) Guillemin. Mervin graduated at Stoughton High School in 1977 and later took the Municipal Administration course under the instruction of Thelma Wright. He took his first job in 1980 at the Rural Municipality of Excel # 71 in Viceroy, Saskatchewan. Mervin married Gaylene Shenher on May 3, 1986, and they were blessed with two children, Lindsey and Joel. He was a great father and very proud of both his children. Mervin’s relationships with both family and friends were treasured and very important to him. He was a very positive and courageous man, with an amazing attitude. Mervin had a wonderful sense of humour and was a very witty guy. He enjoyed dancing and participated in many sports, such as hockey, curling, broomball, fastball, golf, water skiing and downhill skiing. He also coached baseball, fastball and hockey for both Lindsey and Joel’s teams. Mervin was a hard and dedicated worker, and was involved with many jobs. He worked for the RM of Excel No. 71, the RM of Lake of the Rivers No. 72, sold hail insurance, did financial work at Red Coat Rail and audited for three community pastures. He was also a member of the local rec. board, school board, finance chair for two church boards, volunteered for the Fire Department in Viceroy, and was the Exalted Ruler, Past Exalted Ruler, District Deputy and Past District Deputy of the Bengough Elks. Mervin will be dearly missed by his family and friends, and memories of him will be always treasured. Mervin is survived by his loving family, wife Gaylene (nee Shenher); daughter Lindsey; son Joel; mother Edith; brother Cedric (Sheila), Leslie (Pat); sister Karen (Tom) Matyjanka; in-laws Bernard and Gayle Shenher; sister-in-law Celeste (Clark) Kwasnicki; and numerous nieces and nephews. Mervin is predeceased by his father Armand (2007). Prayers were held on January 14, 2014 at 7:30 p.m. and Funeral Mass on January 15, 2014 at 2:00 p.m., both at St. George Roman Catholic Church, Assiniboia, SK. Celebrants were Father Joy Montiague and Father Andrew Pawlowicz. The eulogy was shared by Gaylene Guillemin. Urn bearers were Gaylene, Lindsey and Joel Guillemin. Honorary bearers were "All those who shared in Merv’s life.” An honour guard was formed by the Bengough Elks. Interment will take place at Mount Hope Cemetery at a later date. Memorial donations in memory of Mervin to the South Country Health Care Foundation, Box 1750, Assiniboia, SK S0H 0B0, were greatly appreciated.
