Obituary of Georges Lorrain

Georges Robert Joseph Lorrain, of Gravelbourg, SK, passed away on Tuesday, February 18, 2014, at the age of 76 years. Georges was born on May 22, 1937 on the Lorrain homestead North-West of Gravelbourg. He was the youngest of Amedée and Berthe Lorrain’s eight children. Georges attended elementary school in Gravelbourg, and received his secondary education at College Mathieu. When Georges finished his schooling he began farming with his father and three of his older brothers. In 1956, Georges met Madeleine Spronken and they were married in 1958. They moved into a small house located in the same yard as Georges’ parents. For the next 55 years they remained on the same homestead and raised two boys, Michel and Guy. In 1979 Georges, along with his father and brothers René, Arthur and Edouard, collectively farmed together. After their father passed away, the brothers continued working together. Although grain farming was the foundation of their operations, they were also involved in a variety of other enterprises, including burying miles of telephone cable, construction projects, and assembling farming machinery. Their crowning achievement was when they began designing their own unique farming equipment. It was during these projects that Georges’ love for solving mathematical problems excelled, and he was able to design durable inventions that stood the test of time. Georges always enjoyed attending the Farm Progress Show to look at what was new in the farming industry. He welcomed new ideas and was a good listener. Georges liked to play cards and pool, loved to visit, and enjoyed family get-togethers, especially the Reveillion de Noel with the Lorrain family after Christmas Eve Mass. Georges will be dearly missed by his family and friends. Georges is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Madeleine (nee Spronken); son Michel (Janet) Lorrain, grandchildren Revée, Stephanie; son Guy Lorrain (Cheryl); sisters Solange Chevrier, Clarisse Woods; brother Arthur (Eveline) Lorrain; sisters-in-law Thérèse Lorrain, Louise Lorrain; brothers-in-law John (Gloria) Spronken, Peter (Shawn) Spronken; sisters-in-law Cecile (Nick) Pyrch, Betty Spronken; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
