Obituary of Rose Bien

Rose Mary Bien, devoted daughter, beloved sister, much loved Auntie and friend, was born to John and Mary Bien on their farm north of Glen Bain, Saskatchewan on December 8,1923 and passed away on September 2,2024, at the age of 100 years. Her nephew Brian and his wife Marilyn were by her side.

Rose was predeceased by her parents, John and Mary Bien, her brothers and their respective spouses Frank (Sophie), Bill (Lorraine), and Tony (Dorothy) Bien, her nephew Les Bien and his wife Charlene and her nieces-in-law Susan Bien and Lorna George.

She is survived by her niece and nephews Michelle, Don, Jerry, Bruce, Gary (Polly), Brian (Marilyn) and their children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren

Rose received her early education and completed grade 12 at Middlefold School which was located across the road from the farm. She recalled that when her mother was making doughnuts, if the breeze was in the right direction, it would fill the school with good smells. The school kids and the teacher would run across the road for a treat, then her mother would send them back to school.

Rose proceeded on to graduate from Reliance Business College in Regina, Saskatchewan, where she received a secretarial certificate. She worked in Regina for several years at the Revenue Building and then she accepted a position as secretary to the Vice President of SAIT in Calgary, Alberta. During her career of 30 years Rose was also active in various women's business organizations.

She retired to Swift Current, Saskatchewan, where she was a member of the Royal Purple and the CWL. Many new friends were made in Swift Current of whom she fondly spoke about and participated in a great deal of activities with. Rose was a season ticket holder for *Stars For Saskatchewan". She enjoyed attending Little Theater Plays, Walk & Talk with the Artist at the Art Gallery, and Lunch & Learn at the Museum. She spent a great deal of fulfilling time at the Swift Current Public Library visiting with the staff, reading the newspapers and attending presentations.

She always enjoyed playing along with Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy on TV, and rarely missed the evening news.

Rose was an avid golfer and bowler, she delighted in square dancing, road trips, and quiet walks along the parkway. She was an amazing cook and baker which she generously shared. You never left her place hungry. Her "Skinnies" oatmeal cookies were a particular favorite. She excelled at sewing, quilting, embroidery and crocheting. She said "I've crocheted some nice afghans - I give them away - I guess I'm sitting in everybody's home now". Rose was a part of a group of dedicated women called the Miracle Quilters who handmade and donated Seventy different quilts for an auction which was designated as a fundraiser for the Swift Current Roman Catholic Community Building Fund.

Growing up she helped her mother with large gardens at the farm, and that green thumb had her deck overflowing with beautiful flowers

Rose was most proud of her family and held them close. She had a book of dates for anniversaries and birthdays that she kept in her purse, and she remembered every one of the dates. In the summer of 2014 she had a "Big Idea". Rose hosted a family reunion in Swift Current which brought family members from near and far together, which pleased her to no end. Family was a priority. She would say to us "Be good, be careful, and love that family" She loved watching the family grow with all the new babies being born. Rose had a soft spot for teddy bears and plushies, which she called "Rosies Zoo" Rose loved children and would always be asking about "The Little Ones".

She will always be our "Chochee" (Auntie) Rose to all of us, she was much loved. There is sadness, but also inevitability and gratitude for her life. Rose lived in Faith, taking comfort that one day she would be reunited with her deceased family in Heaven. May Rose be her young, healthy, beautiful, stylish self once again in Heaven. After being a long time resident of Swift Current, Rose moved to Regina in 2019 and took up residency at Queen Victoria Estates, and later moved to Riverbend Crossing Memory Care. Her family would like to thank the staff at Wascana Grace Hospice for the loving care she received in her final days.

Do not watch the petals fall from the rose with sadness, Know that, like life

Things sometime must fade,

Before they can bloom again.
