Obituary of Hazel Lagassé

It is with great sadness that the family of Hazel June (née Curtis) Lagassé announces her passing on Sunday, December 8, 2024, at St. Joseph Hospital in Gravelbourg, Saskatchewan. Hazel was 81 years old.

Hazel was born on June 10, 1943, in Rockglen, Saskatchewan, the eighth of fifteen children born to William “Bill” and Alice (née Swenson) Curtis. She grew up in Moose Jaw, where she met her husband, Henri Lagassé. The couple married on June 5, 1965, and were blessed with five children: Dennis (1966), Louis (1967), Edward (1969), Annette (1970), and David (1974).

In 1967, Hazel and Henri settled in Gravelbourg to raise their family. Hazel was a devoted and loving mother, known for her patience and kindness. Tragically, Henri passed away in 1980, but Hazel continued to provide a nurturing home for her children.

Hazel found joy in gardening and cherished her daily coffee outings with friends. She had a special gift for caring for others, often looking after her grandchildren when they stayed home sick from school. Hazel cherished camping trips with her family and made countless wonderful memories cheering on her grandchildren at their sporting events. She also enjoyed helping with the garage sale at IPI and hunting for treasures at garage sales around town.

In 2022, Hazel moved into the Lafleche and District Health Centre, where she found comfort in the company of other residents and was grateful for the compassionate care provided by the staff.

She is survived by her loving family: son Dennis (Virginia) Lagassé, son Louis Lagassé, son Ed (Tracey) Lagassé, daughter Annette (Murray) Gruending, and son David (Christine) Lagassé. She was a proud grandmother to Amanda, Jessica, Ian, Derek, Dylan (Payton), Celyn, and Wyatt. Hazel also leaves to mourn three sisters and many nieces and nephews.

Hazel was predeceased by her husband Henri  Lagassé, her parents Bill and Alice Curtis, and eleven siblings.

Special thanks to the staff at Lafleche and District Health Centre, St. Joseph Hospital and the Gravelbourg EMS for their care and compassion.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, April 26, 2025, at the Gravelbourg Legion Hall. Hazel will be laid to rest at the Gravelbourg Roman Catholic Cemetery.
