Mavis began her life†™s journey on the family farm northwest of Palmer, SK on August 24, 1925, the first-born child of Sam and Eva Miller. She grew up on the farm, attending Netterville school until she went to stay in Palmer with her sister, Doreen, so they could complete Grade 12. After graduating, they both attended Normal School in Regina to become teachers. Mavis taught in various country schools until 1945, when she married the love of her life, Charles Shoemaker who farmed north of Mazenod. In 1976, Mavis and Charlie built a new house in Mossbank and retired there when their son, Leslie, took over the family farm. Their doors were always open to family and friends, and especially to their grandchildren and great grandchildren. Mavis was a great cook, gardener, seamstress, knitter and crocheter, card player and hostess. She was a member of the UCW, Mossbank Kinettes and Eastern Star. Mavis and Charlie spent many winters in Yuma, Arizona where they forged many new friendships and enjoyed socializing with old friends, cousins and neighbours from Saskatchewan.
Mavis and Charlie were very sad when they had to leave their family and friends in Mossbank and move to Moose Jaw to receive that care that they required in their later years. Therefore, donations in Mavis†™ memory may be made to the new Furrows and Faith Retirement Villa, Box 129, Mossbank, SK S0H 3G0.
