Obituary of Donna Davis

With greatest sorrow and sadness, we announce the passing of our beloved Donna. On May 14, 1952 Donna was born in Ponoka, Alberta. As a young child, the family moved to Selkirk, Manitoba. In Selkirk, Donna completed her education. While attending the psychiatric school of nursing she began her lifelong partnership with Andre (Chevrier) and Grant (McLellan). Together they made their home in Winnipeg, Manitoba. After leaving Winnipeg, they moved to Saskatchewan (Bulyea, Moose Jaw). In Moose Jaw, she was the Group Aide Activity Supervisor at Valley View Centre. After leaving Saskatchewan, they moved to Vancouver, BC and then to Richmond, BC. Donna’s career focus throughout her life was health care during which she provided care to people with special needs, child services, elders, and palliative care. Her nature was always to put others above herself, which was exemplified in both her career and home life. In Vancouver, Donna truly fulfilled her calling when she became an Emergency After Hours Receiving Foster Parent for The BC Ministry of Children and Family Services. As a foster parent, she cared for three thousand, two hundred and forty-nine children both in their Vancouver home and then in their home in Richmond, BC. To Donna, every child mattered and every child deserved to be safe, nurtured, and respected. Above all of her remarkable work with children, Donna and Andre’s greatest wish to be parents was realized when their beautiful daughter Skyla came into their life. Donna engaged in all school activities with her daughter and served as a member of the Parent Advisory Committee in Richmond, She participated in fund-raising for school projects, including the planning and building of a schoolyard playground. Donna loved being Skyla’s Mom (and still does). Donna’s pastime activities included needlecraft, cooking, (sometimes creating and preparing wonderfully unique and exotic dishes), and reading, particularly science fiction. She really liked science fiction. She loved humour and laughter. Donna was pre-deceased by her father (Richard) and her mother (Laufey). She is survived by Andre, Skyla, Grant, her brothers (Robert, Richard), her sisters (Deborah, Dorthea), numerous nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews. Donna loved her pets (Boots, Princess, Lily, and Berry) who completed her family. Donna's fight with cancer was brief and so courageous. She passed away on July 21, 2014. Donna and her family wish to thank family members and friends for their emotional support, love and encouragement, Cheryl Hedge for her extraordinary compassion and assistance to Donna, her family and friends; and the BC Ministry Social Workers for their comforting words, wishes and visits. The love you all shared with Donna and her family has been immeasurable. The family sends their deepest appreciation to the Vancouver General Hospital Palliative Care Unit, all the nurses, all the staff, and Dr.Yeomans, for their outstanding and loving care for Donna and family. A special thank-you to Father Dennis for his kindness, guidance, and support during this time. Prayer Service: Tuesday, July 29, 2014 at 7:00 PM with Father Maurice Minne; Funeral Service: Wednesday, July 30, 2014 at 1:00 PM with Reverend Bob Langdon.
