Obituary of Gordon Johnson

Gordon Carl Johnson of Assiniboia, SK passed away on Wednesday, December 10, 2014, at the age of 93 years. Gordon was born April 2, 1921, on the family farm in the Congress district, to Carl and Esther Johnson. He took his schooling at Airlie School. Gordon joined the Canadian Army in November 1942 and trained as a gunner. He was posted to various bases within Canada and was discharged in March 1946. After the war he began farming in the Congress district and in the later years farmed with his brother Henry, on the Carl Johnson farm. In 1993, at the age of 72, Gordon married Adriane and they were able to share 21 years of happiness together. Gordon was one of the original Congress baseball players and was the pitcher for the team for a number of years, and many a tale has been told of his pitching prowess. He also curled for the Congress Curling Club. Hunting and fishing were a passion and his accuracy with a rifle is there to see in the moose head that adorns the wall at Adriane’s cottage. His mechanical ability was remarkable and enabled him to build a small working model of a Rumley, and also to restore the original Rumley purchased by his father in the 1920s. Gordon and Adriane moved into Assiniboia in 1999, and in 2004 Gordon’s health required long term care and he became a resident of the Ross Payant Nursing Home. Funeral Service was held on Tuesday, December 16th, 2014, at 2:00 p.m., at the Assiniboia Alliance Church, with Pastor Greg Dermody officiant. The eulogy was shared by Terry Peters. Be Thou My Vision was sung by Max Magnus, accompanied by pianist Mildred Pomrenke. Words of Remembrance were written by Harvey Mayell and read by Janice Salaba. Words of Comfort, Isaiah 40:28-31, were shared by Pastor Greg Dermody. Organist was Illa Mitchell, and congregational hymns were I Need Thee Every Hour, In His Time, and Abide With Me. Pallbearers were Terry Peters, Stephen Primrose, Kelly Johnson, Monty Johnson, Ross Pomrenke, and Max Magnus. Family Interment took place at Mount Hope Cemetery, Assiniboia, SK. Memorial donations in memory of Gordon to the Ross-Payant Centennial Nursing Home Auxiliary, Box 2105, were greatly appreciated. Funeral arrangements entrusted to Piche-Hawkins-Grondin Funeral Chapels, Assiniboia & Gravelbourg.
