Obituary of Lenore Hickox

Lenore Gertrude Hickox of Gravelbourg, SK passed away peacefully in the comfort of her home on Friday, February 26, 2016, at the age of 94. Lenore was born on September 18, 1921, in Nokomis, SK, to William and Corinne (nee Wingfelder) Lettner. After graduating from high school, she went on to further her education at the Regina Grey Nuns Hospital School of Nursing. Lenore graduated as a Registered Nurse in 1944. She nursed for 41 years, working in Nokomis, Moosomin, Kincaid, Lafleche, Watson, and Gravelbourg. It was during Lenore’s time in Lafleche that she met Robert Hickox, and they were married on October 6, 1949. Lenore and Robert settled in Gravelbourg, where they raised their four children, Bill, Betty, Howard, and Ron. Lenore was very proud of her children and grandchildren, and loved to tell anyone who would listen what count she was at. The last count that she was at was: "I have 12 grandchildren, 33 great grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild on the way.” Lenore loved the outdoors; as a kid she loved swimming, curling, skating, and playing hockey. Lenore enjoyed going out to the farms and seeing her children’s animals, she liked the horses, calves, and baby lambs. She was always up for playing a game of cards or a board game. Lenore was competitive and liked to win, even jigsaw puzzles were a contest. She loved making crafts and knitting. Lenore had knit everyone in her family several things over her many years. She loved getting a phone call or visit, but you could be cut short if it was during the times that the rosary, wheel-of-fortune, family feud, jeopardy, or any curling gave was on TV. Lenore was an independent and strong minded lady, and had many favorite sayings, such as: "the old grey mare ain’t what she used to be,” and "want a peppermint, you better take two.” Lenore was an excellent nurse and loved her job. Her work ethic and compassion are an inspiration to her family, and Lenore will be deeply missed, but forever in their hearts. Lenore is survived by her son Bill Hickox, grandchildren Karen Hickox, Ian Hickox, Donna Hickox, Bette Anne (Justin) Sorenson, mother of their children Lynn Hickox; daughter Betty (Fred) Hawkins, grandchildren Carrie (Larry) Empey, Krista (Chad) Bara, Ryan (Krystal) Hawkins, Dustin (Twila) Hawkins; son Howard (Sandra) Hickox, grandchildren Terri Hickox, Julie (Mark) Rumancik; son Ron (Bernadette) Hickox, grandchildren Angela (Gary) Reiter, Lisa (David) Kovacs; 33 great grandchildren; sister Phyllis Kornder. Predeceased by her husband Bob Hickox; parents William and Corinne Lettner; brothers Ralph Lettner, Bill Lettner; sisters Corinne Lettner, Blanche Ritchie, Lillian Townsend, Monica Jorgensen. Funeral Mass was held on Tuesday, March 1, 2016, at 11:00 a.m., at Our Lady of the Assumption Co-Cathedral, Gravelbourg, SK. Celebrant was Father Hope Klutsey. Cross Bearer was Donna Hickox. Candle Bearers were Terri Hickox and Julie Rumancik. Readers were Donna Hickox and Angela Reiter. Prayers of the Faithful were shared by Kelsey Rumancik, Tiffani Empey, Adanna Bara, and Brittany Gerbrandt. Offertory Gifts were presented by Jade Rumancik, Tamara Empey, and Reece Hawkins.
