This is one of my favourite memories of ELIE DION.... About 1985, Elie motored to Calgary to spend the winter with my husband, Frank's parents – Elizabeth and Sylvio Clermont. Their house was located 2 blocks from our home by way of back allies. Mom and I phoned each other at least every second day and more. But this one morning, about 10 am, was different. While discussing what plans we each had for the day, suddenly, out of no where, a deafening bang reached my ear through the phone receiver. The conversation was cut short. There was absolute, dead silence from the other end of the wires. It was a scary silence. I was very concerned; all kinds of thoughts raced through my mind as I called to Mom to answer me – “Mom are you alright? Where are Dad and Elie, are they ok? Mom are you there, what happened?” No response! I was imagining the worst now, knowing Dad was not consistent keeping the doors locked, night or day because he'd forget. Mom wasn't answering; I heard nothing in the background after the sound of explosion or – maybe even was it a shotgun?. Finally, Mom in a calm and undisturbed voice says,”Oh yeah, Dad put the liniment in the micro wave to heat it up with the cap still on the bottle”. I asked if they were all ok. I sensed aggravation now, with audible anger in her voice as she replied,”Oh yes, we're all ok”. I could hear Elie intervening a bit, trying to unruffle feathers in that kitchen. Dad was mumbling in the background as he often did. Elie was attempting to make peace between Mom and Dad. I instantly hung up the receiver and literally ran down the back allies to their house, all the time visualizing the intense atmosphere in that kitchen and I recall thinking,”Elie could use help”. I stepped in the back door and the malodorous stink of liniment and I collided. The smell was so strong, I don't think anyone of the 3 had a cold that winter. I got to the kitchen, Dad was no where to be seen while Mom proceeded to show me the hole caused by the bottle that hurriedly soared out the back of her next to new micro wave oven. She was not a happy camper. Elie was sitting behind the table in the corner, pretending to read the Calgary Herald paper. I asked him quietly if he did this. He had a wide grin but we didn't laugh out loud. We both started giggling. Here comes Dad still mumbling under his breath. Mom disappeared down the hallway. I asked Dad what happened, he didn't really answer, only mumbled. Elie was just a shaking with giggles. I couldn't look at him, we'd start giggling again. For years after, we joked and laughed about this. We had good times with Elie when we were young and through later years. Elie was always ready for entertaining a good laugh or joke. We remember him as a kind and gentle man; thoughtful and enjoyable. We remember him as having helped others to make their lives easier. You, Elie, impacted many with your quiet, humble ways. Now that you are on your final journey home; a better place where you will join your loved ones. We will remember you; you will be missed immensely. P.S. And oh, don't forget to cheer for the Montreal Canadians.

Condolences to the Dion family. Elie spent many years with the Heidt family in Mamkota. During this time he become thought of as a member of the family. Elie and I would always watch hockey on Saturday nights when it was the original 6. He was a great fan of the Montreal Canadians and never missed a game. As for me I always cheered for the other team jumping up and down on the couch. Elie would just sit there and laugh. Regardless of the outcome he accepted what was and would say "next time maybe" I will carry many fond memories or Elie. Al Heidt

Uncle Elie

I had the pleasure to see uncle Elie in his element recently when I visited him in Mankota last summer. Before that I had seen him when he came out to visit us on the farm or in Ottawa. It was really nice to get some one on one time with him. He was usually a man a few words, but he shared some old farming stories and some of his investment wisdom. He also took me around to visit our extended family around the area. It was realy nice to see him a man on the praries driving around in his truck from farm to farm. I am very sorry that we lost you so soon Uncle Elie, I was hoping to go back for more visits.

We wish to convey our sincere condolences to you....Regis and Elizabeth; Sally(Salange); Maryann; Ovide and all the nieces and nephews. Nothing we can say will ease your pain. But, perhaps, every once in awhile when the sadness washes over you, think of the happy times you had with him. We too, have great and fond memories of the times we spent with him. He was gentle and thoughtful, composed and humble with an inner grin. He always made certain the other person was comfortable first. Elie gave much of himself to better others' lives. He will be missed by many.

Elie: Always There

We so enjoyed time spent with Elie. No matter what the occassion, be it a wedding, a funeral or any family gathering, we could always count on Elie being there among us. He was somewhat of an icon in my mind - being the oldest-born son as the 3rd generation began under his pioneer maternal grand-parents. Penny and I enjoyed having Elie come to our cottage at Lac Pelletier and share in our family gatherings. And who could forget his signature drink mixture famously known as the "Elie Special". He was a great friend of our dearly departed brother-in-law, Edmond Chabot and our sister Odile. He was always included in gatherings at their home. Elie had a great sense of humour and was always a joy to be around. He was a kind and gentle guy whose memory we will cherish.
