Obituary of Campbell Smith

Colin Campbell Smith of Coderre, SK passed away on Friday, May 13, 2016, at the age of 83 years. Campbell was born on the family farm south-west of Coderre, on October 1, 1932. He was the sixth child of Charles and Alice (nee Brewer) Smith. Campbell received his education at the Bar Hill Country School, a few miles across country from the farm, and after it closed he attended school in Coderre. He bought a Model T car and started to make a few trips to the Mossbank area to visit Mearl Maloney. On October 22, 1960, Campbell and Mearl were married at St. Andrews Church in Moose Jaw. After the wedding and a honeymoon to the States, they made their first home with Campbell's brother Jim until their house was ready. A house was moved into the yard and after a little work, it was home. In 1974, a new house was built on the farm. Over the years, Campbell was involved in many community organizations. He was a member of the 4-H club for several years, and a charter member of the Coderre Lions Club, where he served as club President, Secretary, and Visitation Chairman several times. He also was a collector of arrow heads and model tractors, and enjoyed family time at Shamrock Park. In 1985, Campbell and Mearl received the Family Farm Heritage Award for consecutively operating and occupying the home farm that his father settled in 1918. He decided to try something different in 1985 and took on the job of the pest control officer with the RM of Shamrock. Twice a year you would see his old yellow bus dusting down all the back roads to all of the farms in the RM. In the spring of 1991, both Campbell and the old bus retired from the pest control job. Campbell and Mearl were blessed with one son, Glen. His greatest loss was the death of his son on May 5, 2015. Campbell was a genuine and kind person, and he will be dearly missed by his loving family and friends. Campbell is survived by his wife of 56 years Mearl Smith; grandson Tyson Smith (Teneille Clements); Glen’s fiancé Shauna Duzan and her daughter Shayna; brother Jim (Thora) Smith; sister-in-law Dorothy Smith. Predeceased by his beloved son Glen Smith (May 5, 2015); parents Charles and Alice Smith; siblings John Smith, Marguerite, (Gordon) Myhra, Will (Edna) Smith, Jean (Charlie) Binner, Sheila (Stewart) Noess. Funeral Service was held on Wednesday, May 18, 2016, at 2:00 p.m., at St. Charles Roman Catholic Church, Coderre, SK, with Sam Hawkins officiant. The eulogy was shared by Tyson Smith and Lisa Hemrica. Reader was Pat Maloney. Active Pallbearers were Pat Hawkins, Walter Hawkins, Chris Hawkins, Fred Hawkins, Larry Costley and Al Wellbrock. Interment took place Grace United Church Cemetery. Memorial donations in memory of Campbell to the Shamrock Regional Park, Box 223, Shamrock, SK S0H 3W0, were greatly appreciated.
