Obituary of Irwin Nagel

Irwin Walter Nagel of Mossbank, SK passed away on October 18, 2016, at the age of 65 years. Irwin was born on June 5, 1951 at the family farm, 15-12-01-W3, in the Mossbank District. He was the second son of Arnold and Edeltrout Nagel in a family of 7 children: Alfred, Irwin, Ted, Ella, Shirley, Alvin, and Elden. As a young boy Irwin enjoyed fishing with his grandpa and swimming in the dugout. He attended Center Ridge School from 1957 to 1963, and then Mossbank High School where he graduated in 1969. Farm chores consumed a majority of his time, such as carrying drinking water to the house, seeding, summer fallowing, combining, cutting and racking hay, moving and stacking hay bales, milking cows, butchering cows, pigs, ducks, turkeys and chickens, and also weeding and harvesting the vegetable garden. One of Irwin’s hidden talents was the ability to successfully witch for water using a crowbar. Irwin loved tinkering with engines and could make almost anything run that had a carburetor and points. He began working as a mechanic at Alfred’s Auto Body Shop in Mossbank, and it was there that he met Alfred’s sister Thyra Eason. On June 26, 1982, Irwin and Thyra were married. Irwin gained both a wife and a stepson, Michael. Adam was born on December 21, 1982, completing their family. Irwin was a good husband and provider. He was very proud of his sons and enjoyed seeing them graduate from High School. Extended family was also important to Irwin and he loved attending all family celebrations, such as birthdays and anniversaries. Both his son’s weddings were a highlight for Irwin, as well as becoming a grandfather when William and Gavin were born. Even though Irwin was a big man, he was often invisible as he was generally soft spoken and would rather work in the background. He was hardworking, resourceful, good natured and generous, and will be dearly missed by his family and friends. Irwin is survived by his loving wife of 34 years Thyra Nagel (nee Eason); son Michael (Stephanie) Eason, grandchildren William and Gavin; son Adam (Natasha) Nagel; brothers and sisters Ted Nagel, Ella (George) Petrisor, Shirley (Glen) Emmons, Alvin (Wendy) Nagel, Elden Nagel; his aunt Ruth Bethke; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Predeceased by his parents Arnold (1982) and Edeltrout (1994)(nee Wemert) Nagel; brother Alfred Nagel, nephew Tony Emmons. Visitation was held on Friday October 21, 2016, from 7:00pm – 9:00pm at Piche-Hawkins-Grondin Funeral Chapel, Assiniboia, SK. Family Interment took place on Saturday, October 22, 2016, at 4:00 pm, at St. Matthew’s Lutheran Cemetery, Mossbank, SK. Funeral Service was held on Saturday, November 12, 2016 at 11:00am at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Moose Jaw, SK, with Reverend John Kreutzwieser officiant. Memorial Tributes in memory of Irwin to the Diabetes Association of Saskatchewan, 917 Albert St., Regina, SK S4R 2P6 and the Heart and Stroke Foundation, 1738, Quebec Ave., Unit 26, Saskatoon, SK S7K 1V9, were greatly appreciated.
