Quitting Smoking.

I was very sad to hear of Johnny Harden's passing. I've known him for years from our family garage, Hamon Enterprises Ltd. (Now HB Junction) in Gravelbourg. My deepest sympathies to his family.

In 1992, I was deperate to quit smoling. I had tried everyhting from laser to hypnosis and to not taking cigarettes with me, and then later having to drive 12 miles to buy a pack. (I lived halfway between Gravelbourg and Limerick.)

One day I met Johnny at the garage, and told him how I just couldn't quit. If you knew Johnny, you know that he liked to kid you a lot. So to this day, I don't know if this was a joke, or the result of wisdom and experience.

Anyway, he told me that the reason that I couldn't quit was because I didn't do it during the right time of the moon. So I asked him, ''Where on earth am I going to find out what time of the moon I need to quit smoking.?' He replied, ''It's easy, it's listed in the farmer's almanac.''

Deep down inside, I thought he was laughing at me, but I was desperate, so I went out and bought the Old Farmer's Almanac. I looked up the date, and on that day threw my cigarettes away.

That was October 22, 1992. 25 years later, I've never had another cigarette. I trust that johnny will reach down with a bolt of lightning if I ever try to light another cigarette. Rest in Peace Johnny!!

My deepest sympathies to you all on the loss of a man who was one of a kind. Although I only had the pleasure of being in his company a hand full of times he left quite the impression. Always a twinkle in his eye and a joke on his lips. Always wearing a smile. He will be fondly remembered.
