Obituary of George Mayes

George Leonard Mayes (April 26, 1921-Oct. 21, 2017) It is with sadness, yet gratitude, for a life well-lived that the family of George Mayes announce his passing at the age of 96 on Saturday, October 21, 2017. He was predeceased by his wife Mary (Welyerko) in 1995, his parents Mary and Mike, his siblings: Ann, Dan, Nick, Bill, Lorne and John. George is survived by his children: Marilyn Wilson (Lyle), Kathy Leson (Stu), Bob Mayes (Karine) and Elaine Mayes. Grandchildren: Mark (Chelsey), Kimberley (Mauricio), Heather (Paul), Amy, Stacy, Clark, Dean, Karah and Travis. Great-grandchildren Hazel, Emmett, Lidia, and Anna. George leaves behind his sister Eleanor Biholar, sister-in-laws Rose and Shirley Mayes, and his dear friend Helen Jonescu. George was born on a farm south of Limerick. He attended Bruce and Milton Schools. To be closer to school during some winters his family moved into Limerick so that the six brothers and two sisters were able to go to school there. In his teens he travelled to Ontario as his two older siblings were already there. In Ontario he was able to get to know the rest of his mother’s large family and worked at whatever job he could find. Dad married Mary on July 9, 1949 in Assiniboia. They lived on the family farm near Assiniboia where they raised their four children. They moved to Assiniboia in 1990. George’s time in Assiniboia was filled with gardening, still helping on the farm and most important visiting with friends. The funeral service was held at the Piche-Hawkins-Grondin Funeral Chapel on Saturday, October 28, 2017 in Assiniboia with Neil Gilbert officiating Tributes were given by daughters Marilyn and Elaine. Pallbearers were grandsons Mark Wilson, Dean Mayes, Clark Mayes, Travis Mayes Wong, and grandson-in-laws Mauricio Jimenez and Paul Kindermann. Internment followed at Mount Hope Cemetery. Lunch followed at the Assiniboia 55 Club. The family would like to give a special thank you to neighbours Bill and Shirley Goruick and Dr. Carulei and the staff at the Assiniboia Union Hospital for all they have done for Dad over the years. Donation may be made to the South Country Care Foundation for the Assiniboia Union Hospital.
