Obituary of Robert Sangster

Robert George Sangster passed away on Feb. 7, 2018, one week short of his 96th birthday. Robert, son of John and Elsie Sangster, was born on Feb. 14, 1922, on the family farm. He had a younger sister, Fern. At the age of 13 he started helping with the farming. They bought their first tractor in 1938 and a combine in 1939. At that time he was able to farm on his own with seasonal hired help. He bought the farm from his mother in 1962. In the early 40's a young lady from the Bexhill district came to teach at Hawley School. She took a liking to Robert and in 1945 he married Helene Fjeldberg. They raised five children: Grant, Dana, Roberta, Heidi and Darrell. Robert was a stanch and proud supporter of the Saskatchewan Wheat Pool, The Congress Coop and Coop Implements and was on the local committees of all three. Hobbies and passtimes included collecting antiques and coins, bird watching, playing the mouth organ, cribbage and checkers, and travelling. Curling and Blue Jays Baseball were good entertainment even when his hearing failed. When Helene passed away Robert was still actively farming and continued living on the farm. He later married Helen Rhodes at which time he moved to Assiniboia. In August, 2014, after breaking his hip, he realized he could no longer live alone and moved into the Assiniboia Prairie Villa where he resided till January, 2016, when he moved into the Ross-Payant Nursing Home. Robert never lost his sense of humor and continued to take an interest in what was going on at the farm and in the community. He was still an avid bird watcher and always enjoyed a game of cribbage or checkers. Robert will be dearly missed by his family.
