Obituary of Richard Gehl

Richard Allen Gehl, of Hodgeville, Saskatchewan, passed away peacefully on March 27, 2018, at the Swift Current Union Hospital. Richard succumbed to his battle with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease) after fighting bravely for eight years. The Gehl Ranch, southwest of Hodgeville, was Richard’s home for the better part of his adult life and was always a place of tremendous pride and happiness for Richard. He loved working with livestock and will be remembered as a great cattleman. Richard thoroughly enjoyed ranching and the lifelong friends he made while working in the cattle industry. He loved hunting and spending time in the outdoors. Richard also worked for the Department of Highways for 25 years. Richard’s family and friends were of the utmost importance to him. He was very active in his community, coaching the Hodgeville Huskies and minor hockey. He was a member of the Elks and Kinsmen and supported numerous fundraising initiatives over the years to support various causes in his community. Richard will be forever remembered by his loving family; wife Myrna Gehl; daughter Jesika (Reagan) Gehl; daughter Amanda (Ryan) Bernesky; son Taylor (Ricki) Gehl, grandchildren Brandon, Kane, Kayden, Taylor and Brittyn; father Bill (Anne) Gehl; brother Howard (Linda) Gehl; sisters Elaine (Ron) Glassford and Kathy Gehl (Ernie Wagner); brother Blair (Lucy) Gehl; mother-in-law Margaret Neufeld; brothers-in-law Duane (Marjorie) Neufeld and Rick Neufeld; sisters-in-law Sally (Brian) Wiens and Marlene (Lyle) Braun; numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and extended family and dear friends. He was preceded in death by; mother Doris Gehl; father-in-law Dave Neufeld; grandparents. Prayers were held at St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church in Hodgeville, SK Wednesday, April 4 at 7:00 pm The Funeral Mass was celebrated on Thursday, April 5, at 1:00 pm at Our Lady of Assumption Co- Cathedral, Gravelbourg, Saskatchewan, Father Rick Krofchek celebrant. Cross Bearer was Nigel Haubrich. Readers were Gerald and Beatrice Haubrich. Prayers of the Faithful read by Sally Wiens. Offertory Gifts presented by Corey Haubrich and Val Stolson. Music by Angele Richmond and Leanne Mann. Eulogists were Barry Flichel and Ron Clarke. Honourary Pallbearers were Hodgeville Huskies, 2018 League Champions, Cecil and Jackie Coward, Albert and Jackie Fischer, Roger and Susan Stolson, Scott and Mona Campbell, Bob and Gail Switzer, Kevin Hagel. Active Pallbearers were Barry Haubrich, Barry Mann, Andrew Hanson, Garth Burnett, Peter Ashcroft and Larry Frischke. Ushers were Paulette and Kim Gehl, Sheila and Kevin Haubrich. A Private Family Interment at St. Joseph Roman Catholic Cemetery, Lunch and fellowship followed at the Hodgeville Community Hall, Hodgeville, SK. Memorial donations in memory of Richard were greatly appreciated for the ALS Society of Alberta, 7874 - 10th Street NE, Calgary, Alberta, T2E 8W1.
