Obituary of Ida Prefontaine

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Ida Préfontaine of Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan and formerly of Rockglen and Gravelbourg, Saskatchewan. Surrounded by the unconditional love of her family, Ida Claire Préfontaine passed away peacefully on October 22, 2018, at the age of 90, at Providence Place. She was born on the Préfontaine family farm in Lisieux, Saskatchewan on August 3, 1928, to Georges and Albertine (née Lacroix) Préfontaine. Ida was predeceased by her parents; her brothers Albert, John and George-Émile; sisters Clara, Georgiana, Cécile and Germaine. Ida will be deeply missed by her daughter Lorraine (née Préfontaine) Verville; her grandchildren, Natalie (Cory) Mitchell, Céleste (Bryce) Ducharme, Louis-Joël (Abby Lagace) Verville and Brigitte (Norman Carrobourg) Verville; her great-grandchildren, Erika and Ashlynn Mitchell, Halle and Riley Ducharme, Noah, Mya and Bentley Verville and Hannah Verville; her sisters, Irene (George) Marcenko and Yvonne Knops; sister-in-law Mildred Préfontaine; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. As a child, Ida completed grade eight at Moyer Country School (near Lisieux). She loved looking after the cows and horses on the family farm and helping her parents. Ida had an ear for music and taught herself how to play the guitar. She loved playing guitar, listening to old time country music as well as hearing her grandchildren and great-grandchildren sing songs. She was a magnificent cook and baker – everything she made tasted absolutely amazing. Throughout the summer months, she enjoyed working in her flower and vegetable gardens. Ida’s family meant the world to her and her life revolved around them! She was always so proud and often bragged about the many accomplishments of her daughter and grandchildren. She always adored visiting with her grandchildren, as well as her great-grandchildren, because they brought her so much joy and laughter. On August 3, Ida celebrated her 90th birthday with her family and happily announced to everybody that she "had reached her goal.” Ida was the most loving, strong, hardworking, selfless and generous Mémère! She was always willing to help others in need and constantly put everybody else’s needs before her own. Heaven truly gained an amazing angel and she will forever be in our hearts and memories! The family wishes to sincerely thank the staff at Providence Place for the amazing love, care, friendship and dedication that they showed Ida over the past three years. Ida’s celebration of life was held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, October 29, 2018, at Piché-Hawkins-Grondin Funeral Chapel in Assiniboia, Saskatchewan. A private family interment was held at the Lisieux Roman Catholic Cemetery, Lisieux, Saskatchewan. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Ida’s memory to Providence Place, 100 2nd Avenue North East, Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan S6H 1B8.
