Obituary of Lorne Domes

Lorne Allan Domes of Swift Current, SK, and formerly of Verwood, SK, passed away on Sunday, December 23, 2018, at the age of 80 years. Lorne was born on September 12, 1938, in Assiniboia, SK. He was the youngest of William and Emma (nee Singbiel) Domes’s five children, and a twin to Lorraine. Lorne attended Verwood school. He worked for a year on his uncle Archie Domes’s farm, and later with the RM of Excel as a cat operator. On August 11, 1958, Lorne bought the general store in Verwood, and in 1959 added the Royalite fuel business to his enterprise. Royalite was later bought out by Gulf Oil, so the signs were changed at the business. Lorne had a kind heart and when he drove the fuel truck would bring candy to hand out to kids while making his deliveries. Lorne married the love of his life, Evelyn Coldwell, on October 10, 1958, in Readlyn, SK. Their first home was in the living quarters behind the store. In June 1971, Lorne and Evelyn welcomed their chosen daughter, Laurie Kim. She was a true bundle of joy. In 1976, they bought a new home in Assiniboia and commuted to Verwood for five years, staying in Assiniboia only on the weekends. In 1981, after 23 years in business, Lorne closed the store, selling the trucks and fuel business to Gulf Oil. The family then moved to Assiniboia full time, and Lorne continued to farm with his brother Wilbur. Harvest was Lorne’s favourite time of year, and he enjoyed his toys on the farm, especially his side by side. He was an avid hunter and made trips to White Bear to hunt geese whenever he could. Lorne and Evelyn enjoyed spending their winters in Arizona and retired to Swift Current to be closer to Laurie and the grandchildren. Lorne dearly loved spending time with his grandchildren, and they were the highlight of his life. Lorne loved golfing, and often went twice a day in Swift Current. He was proud to pass this passion on to his grandchildren. Lorne was very social. He enjoyed playing cards, visiting, finding deals, shopping for groceries, and going for a cup of coffee. Lorne was a loving husband, father, and grandfather, and will be dearly missed by his family and friends. Lorne is survived by his wife of 60 years Evelyn (nee Coldwell) Domes; daughter Laurie (Patrick) Fizell, grandchildren Ethan and Maddie; brother Don (Betty) Domes; sister Lorraine (Wilfred) Jordison. He was predeceased by his parents William and Emma (nee Singbiel) Domes; brother Walter (Joan) Domes; and brother Wilbur Domes. Funeral Service was held on Friday, December 28, 2018, 2:00 p.m., at Piche-Hawkins-Grondin Funeral Chapel, Assiniboia, SK. Interment took place at Mount Hope Cemetery, Assiniboia, SK.
