Obituary of John RUST
John Rust of Assiniboia, SK, passed away on August 9, 2012, at the age of 99 years. He was born November 23, 1912 on the family farm in the Stonehenge district, the second youngest child of nine born to Martin and Caroline (Wolf) Rust. John was a second generation farmer and lived his entire life on the land his father homesteaded in 1908. On May 25, 1948, John married Victoria Hyschka and they were blessed with two sons, Melvyn and Blaine. John was a past member of the Assiniboia Rural Telephone Board, Wheat Pool Board, Co-op Board and the RM of Stonehenge Board. John loved books and was an avid reader, as well as a renowned wood turner and historian. A nature lover, he was the first to introduce oak trees to this area by germinating acorns from Ontario, and he supplied a variety of seedling species to friends and neighbours. He collected paleontology artifacts found on his land and was one of the first settlers in the Stonehenge area to mine coal on the south shore of Twelve Mile Lake.
John worked hard in the early 1960's, planting a large variety of trees to create a family park on the Rust farm. In fact you can see evidence of John's tree-planting hobby all around the Stonehenge area. He volunteered his time and expertise building several floats for the 4H Club, and was an accomplished carpenter, plumber, electrician and mechanic. John is survived by his loving wife Victoria (nee Hyshka); son Melvyn (Brenda); grandchildren Johnathon (Joanne Thompson), Deona, and Derrick (Krista Sandrelli); son Blaine (Linda Pellowe); brother Bill (Madeline) Rust. Graveside service was held on Tuesday, August 14, 2012 at the Wolfe Cemetery. Music included "Daddy’s Hands” and "Beyond the Sunset.” The eulogy was given by Blaine Rust. Special memories and scripture readings by Brenda Rust. A poem was shared by Krista Rust. Pallbearers were Melvyn and Blaine Rust, Johnathon and Derrick Rust, Philip Delorme and Lawrence Ludlow. Honorary pallbearers were Darryl and Merle Rust, Jerome Orten and David Skarbon. A celebration of John’s life will be held on Saturday, November 24, 2012 at The 55 Club in Assiniboia, (marking what would have been his 100th birthday).
