Obituary of Charles Benjamin Ernest GRAINGER

Charles Benjamin Ernest Grainger of Ogema, SK, passed away on December 3, 2012, at the age of 96 years. Charles was born on the Grainger Family Farm June 19, 1916, to William and Luella (nee Bush) Grainger. He attended school at Key West, some of which he took by correspondence. Charles worked as a hired hand in Ogema, Ontario and BC before returning home in 1932 to farm with his father and uncle, Ernest Grainger. During WWII Charles joined the Reserve Force and was a corporal. He was the secretary of the Ogema Co-op from 1940 – 1954, president of the Ogema District Credit Union from 1951 – 1968, secretary- treasurer of the Key West Farm Machinery Co-op from 1952 – 1984, delegate of the Wheat Pool from 1951 – 1953 and a member of the PFRA pasture committee. In August 1948, Charles joined Ogema Oddfellows Lodge #83, and throughout the years held many different positions within the organization. On July 31, 1951, Charles married Charlotte Stacey and they were blessed with one daughter, Sharon. Charles was proud of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and enjoyed spending time with them. He valued genealogy and was proud to have recorded his family back to the 1600s. Charles also enjoyed studying languages, such as French, Spanish, German and Swedish, and spending time with his pets. Charles will be dearly missed by his family and friends. Charles is survived by his daughter Sharon (Don) Smith; grandson Don (Leanne) Smith, great grandchildren Brandon Smith, Brittany Smith; grandson Brian Smith, great grandson Desmond Smith; sister Florence Grainger; numerous nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his wife Charlotte (nee Stacey); grandson Charles Smith (1993); parents William and Luella (nee Bush) Grainger; sisters Gladys (Roy) Wiles, Lulu (Charlie) Bramble. Funeral Service was held on Friday, December 7, 2012, at 1:00 p.m., at the Ogema United Church, Ogema, SK, with Sylvia Fitzgerald DLM officiant. The urn bearers were Don Smith and Brian Smith. Organist was Debra Howe. Interment took place at the Ogema Cemetery, Ogema, SK. Memorial donations in memory of Charles to the Alzheimer Society of Saskatchewan, 301-2550 12th Avenue, Regina, SK S4P 3X1, were greatly appreciated.
