Obituary of Roger Joseph Arthur WALTERS

Roger Joseph Arthur Walters of Assiniboia, SK, passed away on December 7, 2012, at the age of 76 years. Roger was born and raised in Melaval, SK, son of Arthur and Julia Walters. Coming from a family of eight kids Roger learned to grow up fast. At a very early age he and his brothers would be herding cows on foot or cultivating the fields with the tractor. Roger always stated that "farming was the best life a man could have”. He definitely was a Saskatchewan boy. At the age of sixteen, Roger struck out on his own taking on various jobs, one being a surveyor up around the Hudson Bay area. His yearning for his home stomping grounds brought him back to Assiniboia in the late 50’s where began working at the Motordrome pumping gas and working in the beloved "grease rack”. He continued working there until 1972 when the Motordrome became Crossroads Pontiac Sales and for the next three decades sold vehicles, until he retired in 1998. In Roger’s career he received many awards from General Motors, but more important to him was the trust and friendship he received from his customers. To Roger selling GM vehicles was easy; after all he always said "when a better car is built…Buick will build it!” Roger married Shirley Curry on November 8, 1958, and they were blessed with two children, Hal in 1959 and Marla in 1965. Roger dearly loved his children and grandchildren. He was always generous, thoughtful, and proud of their accomplishments, whether they were big or small. Roger enjoyed yard work, model building, fishing, hunting and a good Clint Eastwood western. He valued the camaraderie of team sports such as baseball and his beloved New York Yankees. Curling was his true athletic passion; he played it with skill, determination and conviction. He always played to win, and let his family hear about when he lost! Roger’s love for his family was honest and true, and he will by dearly missed. Roger is survived by his loving wife Shirley; son Hal and his wife Renee Walters, grandchildren Chelsea (James) and Harley; daughter Marla and her husband Paul Mayes, grandchildren Kailin and Kendall; brothers Don and his wife Madeline, Garry and his wife Jean, Jerry and his wife Lucille; sisters Elaine Johnson, Carole Collinson; sister-in-law Dianne Walters; brother-in-law Ralph Lachowitzer; numerous nieces, nephews, and many friends. Predeceased by his parents Art and Julia Walters; sister Louise Lachowitzer; brother Robert Walters. Funeral Service was held on Thursday, December 13, 2012, at 1:00 p.m., at Piche-Hawkins-Grondin Funeral Chapel, Assiniboia, SK, with Pastor Arden Barden officiant. The eulogy was shared by Hal Walters and Chelsea Walters. Urn bearers were Harley Walters, Kailin Mayes and Kendall Mayes. Honorary Urn Bearers were Jake and Judy Hort, Carole Bearss and Steve and Sceta Kosti. Interment will take place at Mount Hope Cemetery, Assiniboia, SK, at a later date. Memorial donations in memory of Roger to the Friends of Unit 3B, c/o Hospitals of Regina Foundation, Box 1697, Regina, SK S4P 3Z6, were greatly appreciated.
