Tribute to Grandma by Sarah Kim Errin and Brett
Today we mark the passing of a very special woman, our grandmother Fern Ione Tollefson (nee Craig). On behalf of our family we would like to thank you for coming today to share in our sorrow, but also to share in our joy as we celebrate our Grandma’s life. Grandma was a hardworking and loving woman who lived an active, long life; filled with love, challenges, and adventures. She always worked tirelessly behind the scenes, but today the spotlight is on our Gram.
Grandma was born on June 9, 1927 on the Craig family farm at Vantage to John and Elsie Craig. Grandma is survived by her loving family; her beloved husband of 64 years Roy Tollefson; her son Terry and his wife Rosemarie: their children Errin, Heather, Mary, and Megan; her son Laurie and his wife Christine: their children Sarah and Scott, Greg and Amanda, Eric and Shannon, and Mark; her daughter Kathryn and partner Garnet: Kathryn’s children, Kim and John, Stephen and Stacey, Erica and Tristan. Her son Tim and his wife Lorna: their children Brett and Aubrey, and Lee, as well as 3 great-grandchildren: Aidan, Nevaeh and Lucy. She is also survived by her brothers Ken and Doug; sisters-in-law, Dorothy, Orla, Phyllis, Marg, Jean, and Fran, as well as brothers-in-law Ivar and Ed; and numerous nieces and nephews that she loved so very much.
Grandma was predeceased by her son-in-law Chuck Thomson; her parents John and Elsie Craig, her sister Ruth, her brothers Cleave, Bud, Elwood , Everet, Lawrence and her sisters-in-law Jeanette, Marj and Rayma. She was also predeceased by Roy’s parents Lars and Lily, her brothers-in-law Torie and Eric and sisters-in-law Grace, Mary and Eileen.
Grandma attended Estell School, Mossbank School and Assiniboia for Grade 12. Grandma and Grandpa met at a New Year’s Eve dance that they were invited to by the matchmakers, Uncle Cleave and Aunty Dot.
Grandma was very proud to have worked for a year at the Eaton’s bakery where grandpa walked by frequently. Now we are not sure if it was the delicious pies that attracted him to the store or the beautiful lady working there, but nonetheless they hit it off and were married on NYE of 1948. They then moved to the farm in 1949. They had 4 children, and eventually 13 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren were added to the mix. Family meant everything to Grandma. She supported their efforts in Cubs, Scouts, Girl Guides, CGIT and never missed a hockey game. At every opportunity Grandma and Grandpa attended their grandchildren’s sporting events, concerts, graduations and special events, we always felt so honoured to have them there with us.
Grandma loved Grandpa a lot! They set a wonderful example for all of us, of how a loving couple should be. Grandpa was Grandma’s world. The last few years all Grandma was concerned with was Grandpa’s whereabouts and how he was doing. She would frequently ask, "Where’s Roy?” and would not be satisfied until she could see him.
Grandma always encouraged her children and grandchildren to get an education. She spent countless hours studying with her children and quizzing them for exams.
Grandma enjoyed the holidays that she and Grandpa took; to Hawaii, bus trips to the United States, a tour of Eastern Canada, their England/Scotland/Norway trip and numerous camping trips to Cypress and Waterton. Grandpa tells me however that she was always ready to come home – as home was where she loved to be.
Grandma Fern was very involved in the community. She was an active member of the United Church Women and the Mossbank museum. As a member of the UCW she helped with countless lunches and bake sales. I know that at the bake sales Grandmas baking was the hottest commodity, but I always pre-ordered one of her apple pies. Grandma also put in countless hours at the Museum, picking weeds, planting flowers, cleaning, setting up displays etc. Her favourite event was apple pie day. This was very important to Grandma, and she always made sure it was a success.
Most of the grandchildren have had an opportunity to either attend or help at the Mossbank Museum Pie Day, which I believe Grandma thought should be a national holiday! In about 2006 cousins Greg, Eric and I drove down to help out at pie day. We worked hard throughout the day setting up tables and chairs, serving pie and coffee and taking the dirty cups to be washed by hand at the house building at the museum. Grandma spent the day washing cups, but at the end of it I think Greg, Eric and I started to believe that we could actually walk on water based on how Grandma was talking about us! Grandma loved her grandchildren and she was so proud of each and every one of us. I’m sure her friends at coffee row were sick of hearing how perfect and wonderful we all are – although for some reason, we never tired of hearing it!
Anyone who knew grandma knew that she was a hard worker who would roll up her sleeves and get to work. Grandma also worked in Home Care in Mossbank, and taught Sunday school when her kids were young.
Grandma loved the farm. She loved fall harvest with taking meals and coffee out to the field or driving the truck with small children in the cab with her. The harvest crew always looked forward to seeing her coming over the hill because it meant a break from work with great food!
Grandma Fern was an exceptionally caring person. She was the type of person who always pulled for the underdog. If she was watching sports, and the home team was winning by a large margin she would often say "I’m glad we won, but it sure would be nice for the other team if they could score a few more goals”. If there was someone down on their luck, where most people would not give them a second thought, Grandma was making them supper, bringing them an apple pie, and showing them compassion.
That’s just the kind of good person she was. She didn’t have a mean bone in her body, and I can honestly say I never saw her get angry, except if someone called down Tommy Douglas of course. Tommy Douglas was Grandma's hero, and she lived her life being a strong supporter of the CCF/NDP. Medicare and cooperatives were very important to her, and she strongly believed in them.
We always knew that Grandma would be on our side no matter what. She truly loved us and we are so fortunate to have been able to know her so well. When I was young Grandpa would pick me up and take me on an "adventure” which might consist of going to the museum, to the farm, or to the coffee shop for a Vico. But we always finished our adventure by visiting Grandma. I would get a big hug and kiss, and then fed cookies and buns, and if we were really lucky, some dough dodgers (ask us later about what these treats were!). Grandma lived for a hug and kiss from her grand kids.
I remember spending many days at Grandma and Grandpa’s house over the summers, and I especially remember dinner time at Grandmas. Grandma could make a meal out of virtually nothing and was always ready to feed a crowd. Dinner was always ready promptly at NOON and Grandma ALWAYS had to make extra food because you were never sure who Grandpa was going to bring home. She always had an extra place set at the table and more often than not it was filled with a friend, or a stranger who was soon to become a friend. Even the movers and plumbers doing work at the museum were invited over to dinner at Grandma's and were not allowed to decline her offer.
As many of you know, Grandma Fern had an incredible green thumb! She always had a vegetable garden and was known for her pickles and preserves. Like many of our family, my personal favourite is Grandma’s recipe for dill pickles. I now make Grandma’s dills every year, thinking of her as I do. Grandma was known for her flowers and plants, both inside and outside the home. I was always amazed at Grandma’s intuition with plants… She always knew what needed to be done to make the plant grow to its fullest capacity. Her methods were sometimes a little unconventional, sometimes even vicious, hacking them off part way with a steak knife or re-potting some poor plant with the vigorous fervour of a lumberjack… however, shockingly, it ALWAYS worked! No matter what she’d done to the plant, it always came out looking better the end!
Grandma was a wonderful cook and any time she visited, you were guaranteed to get an ice cream pail or a white plastic garbage bag laden with homemade goodies. She had many go-to recipes that have been adopted by our families… Hamburger soup, buns, apple pies, Yorkshire pudding, pizza buns, cookies, cookies, cookies….
Being a mother was the highlight of Grandma’s life. She spoke often about the love between a mother and child and how she had adored having her babies close to her. This evolved into a love for her grandchildren, and later, her great-grandchildren. Grandma often said that even when a child misbehaved, she still loved them and thought they were cute. And good luck passing a child in public without Grandma attempting to have a conversation with them! Guaranteed, every child she passed got a smile and friendly comment.
Grandma also knew the challenges of being a mom and helped our mothers out in countless ways. When our mothers had their children, Grandma went and stayed at the house for a week or more to help out. She babysat for countless hours, attended hockey games, plays and recitals galore. Grandma was always there when you needed her.
For Grandma's 80th birthday each of the 13 grandchildren were asked by Auntie Kate to compile our Memories of and Lessons learned from Grandma. We've had a few laughs looking back at our responses, and I've summarized them so that you can see Grandma through our eyes.
**When asked if Grandma were to be an animal, which animal would she be - each of us said she was some type of a busy, hardworking animal. The most common responses were a busy bee, a squirrel or a beaver. Now, I'm not sure if you ever had the pleasure of watching Gram hustling around her kitchen to prepare a meal, but if you did, I'm sure that may shed some light on why we had these responses.
**What were the Life Lessons we learned from Grandma?
1. Stand up and fight for what you believe in - this was mentioned by almost all of the grandchildren
2. Live life to the fullest
3. Always lend a helping hand
4. Always be involved in your community
5. Never give up
6. Work hard
7. Don’t be fussy - always try everything once, you never know if you'll like something unless you try it
8. Eat everything on your plate and be grateful for what you have
9. Follow your heart.
10. Most importantly and echoed in each response was Family is most important and not to be taken for granted.
**I think Grandma did a pretty awesome job if these were the lessons we learned from her!
What were our favourite memories of Grandma?
The infamous dough dodger parties, getting a Vico at coffee row, all the great food, bragging about us to everyone whether they cared or not, making us hot cocoa before bed, and her pride in her black hair.
Or how about the time Gram was up on the counter with a butcher knife in her hand trying to reach something in a cupboard that was too far for her to reach! (Innovation!)
Or the time that Gram commented to a waitress on her "nice buns" - and no she didn't mean dinner rolls, much to one of her granddaughters chagrin!
One of Grandma’s favourite memories was dancing with her brothers at town dances. She always told us how they would throw her in the air and between their legs! This was such a happy memory!
Grandma and Grandpa lived on the farm from the time they were married until they moved into their brand new home in Mossbank in 1984. Grandma could look out her front door and see the farm! After the move to town Grandma starting walking with her "walking girls” and us grandchildren were always amazed at how in shape our Grandma was! They moved to Chateau St. Michael in February 2012. They enjoyed their time together there and were thankful for the support they received. Grandma moved to Extendicare in September 2012. The family would like to express their sincere thanks to the staff and management at both these extraordinary facilities. We are ever thankful for the kindness and caring they showed to our grandparents.
In the years when Grandma’s health started to decline, her love for her family never waned. In the last few years, Grandma saw a specialist regarding her memory loss. One of the tasks she was required to do at each visit was to write one sentence. Each time she wrote "I love my grandchildren.” Those four words speak volumes about what was most important to Fern: her family.
Grandma, thank you for the life you made possible for our family. Thank-you for every meal you prepared, all the hard work you did for the community of Mossbank, the Museum, and the United Church. Thank-you for supporting your husband in all of his endeavours and for playing a major role in each of his successes. Grandma, thank-you for the values you instilled in us all: service to others, respect, perseverance, kindness, and above all else, love. You’ve shown us what it means to care for others, whether family, friend, or stranger.
Although we will miss Grandma’s physical presence in our lives, let us not just grieve, but also celebrate her life as it was fully lived. As we talk and visit later at the Hall, let us share our memories, as her spirit continues to live in all of us.
Grandma was very proud of her Scottish heritage. When I found this Scottish blessing, it seemed to fit perfectly with the essence of Fern Tollefson:
If there is righteousness in the heart,
there will be beauty in the character.
If there is beauty in the character,
there will be harmony in the home.
If there is harmony in the home,
there will be order in the nation.
If there is order in the nation,
there will be peace in the world.
So let it be.
True success in life is not measured by wealth, degrees or material things, but is measured by the number of people that loved you and how many people you loved. You can surely see by the number of people present that our grandma touched many lives and was loved by so many. The world is a better place because of our Grandma, Fern Tollefson. We take comfort in knowing we will see Grandma again.
Until we meet again; We love you Grandma!

To Roy and all the family: So sorry to hear about Fern's passing away. It is late aft. Monday Feb 4 and I just picked up the paper to read. I had not heard this news until I read the obituary so therefore also couldn't pass on the information to the rest of the family. I am so sorry as defintely some of us would have been at the funeral. We lost our mom at 85 yrs. old and I still miss her a lot and think of her often. In a few days I will go to see your Roy. Once again, sincere condolences.

Wish we could be there with you this week to celebrate Aunt Fern's incredible life! I was always so impressed by her involvement in her kids and grandkids' (and great grandkids'!) worlds. She really did love her family with every ounce of her being. She was a wonderful host and seemed ready at the drop of a hat to invite the whole community over for tea. I'll remember her famous dinner buns and hopefully make them someday. I will always be inspired by her warmth and generosity of spirit. We will truly miss her.

This has been such a difficult year for Auntie Fern & Uncle Roy, and for the whole family. I hope that she has now been taken to that place where there is "the peace that passeth all understanding". And I hope the next few days of honoring, witnessing, story-telling, prayer, laughter and tears, will bring peace to each one who is grieving her loss. With love, from Jan
