Obituary of Addie Paton

Adeline “Addie” Paton (nee Frank) of Gravelbourg, SK passed away on February 4, 2020, at the age of 96. Addie was born in the Bateman District on September 29, 1923, as the fifth child of fifteen to Henry and Christina (nee Hahn) Frank. Addie attended Arland school in Bateman, SK; she was apart of the Bateman girl’s softball team, where they travelled to surrounding towns for competitions. After graduating in 1942, she moved to Moose Jaw to find employment where she worked at Uptown Restaurant; this is where she met her future husband Clifford James Paton. She changed jobs and worked at Western Grocers until she married Clifford on August 17, 1945. In 1947, they bought the Neil Bekker farm 12 miles northeast of Gravelbourg. In March of 1948, they were blessed with their first son, Pat, then again in October of 1952, with their second son, Terry. While taking Pat to piano lessons, at St. Stephen’s United Church, Addie was also encouraged to take organ lessons by the minister’s wife. Addie eventually took over as the organist and choir director for the church, where she would play for the next 60 years. She also accompanied many soloists for weddings, funerals and other occasions. Addie enjoyed her time being involved in curling, bowling, church activities, crafts, knitting, crocheting and her gardening, as well as being a member of the Prairie Pride Lions Club. Addie and Clifford enjoyed travelling together and followed the Silver Broom World Curling to Switzerland, Sweden, United States and Canada. They also visited Hawaii, Mainland USA, Mexico and Denmark. In 1980, Addie and Clifford bought a house in Gravelbourg and moved to town. Addie is survived by her loving family; son Terry (Dr. Gillian) Paton, granddaughters Ava and Frankie, grandson Jack; daughter-in-law Lilly Paton, grandson Scott Paton (Karena Monroe), grandson Scott Paton (Karena Monroe), granddaughter Sandie (Joceran) Salat, great granddaughter Nève; brothers and sisters Henry Frank, Otto (Norma) Frank, Ruth (David) Hogg, Eleanor (Bob) Laveille, Enid Laughy; brother-in-law Earl Hill; sister-in-law Colleen Frank. Predeceased by her; husband Clifford Paton (2014); son Pat Paton (2017); parents Henry and Christina (nee Hahn) Frank; parents-in-law James and Carrie (nee Bekker) Paton; sisters and brothers Elizabeth (George) Bromberger, Eva (Nick) Gheress, Phill Frank, Chris (Irene) Frank, William Victor Frank, Rose (Cecil) Stewart, Norman Frank, Del (Dean) Swanson, Edna Hill; brothers-in-law Jim Laughy, Grant Rochon, sister-in-law Avis Frank. A United Church Funeral Service was held on Saturday, February 8, 2020, 2:00 p.m. at Our Lady of the Assumption Co-Cathedral, Gravelbourg, SK. The officiant was Reverend Janelle Shaw. The Eulogist was Terry Paton, with Co-Eulogists Marian Johnston, Gene Frank, Grace Frank. Readers were Russell Paton and Valerie Guillemin. Urn Bearer was Scott Paton. Gift Bearers were Ava Paton, Frankie Paton, Jack Paton. Interment took place at Hillside Cemetery, Gravelbourg, Saskatchewan. Memorial Donations in memory of Addie were greatly appreciated for the Foyer d’Youville Foundation, Box 810, Gravelbourg, SK. SOH 1XO.
