Obituary of Martha SCHOENROTH
Martha Emma "M.E” Schoenroth of Gravelbourg, SK passed away on November 1, 2013, at the age of 78 years. Martha was born on September 3, 1935 on the family farm in the Arbuthnot district to John and Martha (nee Kratzer) Rumpel. She grew up on the farm and attended Kramer and Arbuthnot schools, completing grades 10 and 11 at the Convent of Jesus and Mary in Gravelbourg. Martha worked as a nurse’s aide at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Gravelbourg and later at the Rockglen and Hodgeville Hospitals. It was in Hodgeville that Martha met Ernie Schoenroth. They were married on May 27, 1956 in Davidson, SK and were blessed with four children, Bernice, Karen, Randy and Wanda. They began their family while living in Hodgeville and moved to Gravelbourg in 1960. Martha held many odd jobs while the children were young; she cleaned homes and did washing and ironing for families. She also worked at the Rexall Drug Store, Allard’s Men’s Wear and later the Gravelbourg Credit Union, until her retirement. Martha was an excellent seamstress and she sewed all her children’s clothing, as well as many outfits for their dolls. Martha loved music and dancing; and was often playing music in her home. She was an avid reader and always had a book on the cupboard and a cross word puzzle on the go. Martha loved having friends and family stop in for coffee, enjoyed watching curling on T.V., and playing cribbage, solitaire and hearts on the computer. After Ernie passed away, Martha became involved with Cansurmount; she volunteered and supported all cancer functions and recruited others to help. Martha enjoyed spending time with her family and was very proud of all her children and grandchildren’s accomplishments. Martha had a heart of gold and will be dearly missed by her family and friends. Martha was predeceased by her husband Ernest Schoenroth (2004); father John (1968); mother Martha (1978); sisters Bernice in infancy (1937), Rose Anne (1932); brothers Ralph (2000), Frank (2007); brothers-in-law: Cyril Brazier (1991), Conrad Thomas (1999), Henry Schlagater (2010); sister-in-law Myrtle Rumpel (1986).
