Obituary of Bill Batty

William (Bill) Marshall Batty

1930 - 2023

It is with great sadness that the family of Bill Batty of Assiniboia announces his passing on May 20, 2023. He was predeceased by siblings Sam, Bertha, Stanley, Ruth, Helen, Donna, infant Mary June, Doris, Jack and one surviving sister Margaret.

Bill was born on the homestead in the Bruce School District SW 27-7-2 W3rd, R.M. of Stonehenge #73, southwest of Assiniboia. He completed his schooling at the Bruce school. He farmed with his dad and brother Jack until his own sons were old enough to help him.

He married Gertrude (Ruth) Silzer June 15, 1957 in Assiniboia, SK. They were blessed with 4 children: Daryl (predeceased), Alan (Patti), Glenn (Bonnie), Darlene (Kevin Goruick); 7 grandchildren: Amber, Matthew, Kyle, Clayton, Heather, Brittney and Cash and 8 great-grandchildren. Bill enjoyed and took great pride in his family.

Bill had a love of sports from an early age (baseball, hockey, curling and skiing). He carried that enthusiasm throughout his entire life, achieving great success in his curling career. He also truly enjoyed playing bridge and cribbage with his long-time friends.

Bill was a dedicated volunteer who was quick to participate on committees that helped improve our communities, He was instrumental in the conception, fundraising and building of the Prince of Wales Cultural Centre. Sod turning with Prince Charles was one of his highlights. He was a long-time Mason and Shriner and was honoured to receive a lifetime membership in the Masonic.

In his declining years, he always greeted everyone with his broad smile and a wave. The family will hold a private service with just immediate family at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Bill’s memory can be given to the Alzheimer Society of Canada or the Wa Wa Shrine Patient Transportation Fund.
