Obituary of Helen Hornung

Helen Hornung of Vanguard, SK passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, on Wednesday, June 12, 2019, at the age of 88 years. She was born on October 29, 1930, in the Glenbain district. Helen was the second youngest daughter of Anton and Katie (nee Jeremias) Senicar. She grew up on the family farm twelve miles east of Vanguard and attended Arnold School and Vanguard High School. Helen married Albert Hornung on June 1, 1949, and they were blessed with five children, Reg, Myrna, Judy, Kelly, and Tana. Helen loved her family and was happiest when her home was full. Helen was a fantastic cook and baker, and enjoyed making treats for her family. She loved to spoil her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and a sleepover at her house was never complete without one of her signature homemade milkshakes. Helen’s heart and generosity knew no bounds. Her door was always open and she gladly welcomed everyone into her home, always having coffee on and baking on hand. Helen treasured the adventures she had traveling with her daughters and daughter-in-law. Her travels took her to Las Vegas, Mexico, California, Alaska and Banff, where, at the age of 83, she went dogsledding for the fist time. Helen had an unwavering faith, was dedicated to The St. Joseph’s Parish in Vanguard, and an active member of the CWL for over 60 years. She loved Vanguard deeply and family was a broad term to Helen, as her friends, church, and community meant so much to her. Helen was a wonderful caregiver, not only to her family but to many others in the community, and had a special gift for making others feel loved and cared for. She had a busy social life and enjoyed spending time with her friends, quilting, and going out for supper or shows. Helen was so happy when she received a phone call, card, or visit from family. She lived to make their lives better and was proud of each and every one of them. Helen’s life was filled with love, and her legacy will live on. She was an incredible teacher, mother, grandmother, aunt, and friend, who inspired all who knew her. Her memory will live on in all our hearts forever. Helen is survived by her loving family, son Reg (Linda) Hornung, grandson Blaire (Tammy) Hornung, great grandchildren Ryker, Brin, granddaughter Jaimie (Mike) Malmgren, great grandchildren Emily, Carter, Adam; daughter Myrna Wilgosh, grandson Michael (Shauna) Wilgosh, great grandchildren Van, Nixon, granddaughter Cheri (Trent) Senft, great grandchildren Koen, Keaton, Nyah; daughter Judy Gader, granddaughter Cara (Todd) Watkins, great grandchildren Kaedan, Jake, granddaughter Camey (Dave) Hryhor, great grandchildren Kobe, Chace, grandson Garet (Larissa) Gader, great grandchildren Austyn, Jaden; son Kelly (Lorie) Hornung, granddaughter Jill (Colin) Brisebois, great grandchildren Hannah, Caleb, granddaughter Kelsey (Scott) Douglass, great grandchildren Sophie, Isla, granddaughter Taylor Hornung (Travis Statz); daughter Tana (John) Lloyd, grandchildren Kali, Alex, Thomas; sisters Katherine Schiissler and Dolores (Merk) Kapell.
