Arnold, our neighbor
We have many fond memories of Arnold. The one that is foremost in my mind is when Arnold was arguing with my 3-yr-old sister, Eunice. Our dog, Rex, was infamous for killing skunks. Eunice told Arnold that Rex had killed a "sunk" which he repeated to her. She tried to tell him it was a "sunk" and so the argument continued! Arnold was totally amused and laughed with his infectious giggle. Farmer, hunter, horseshoe player, yodeler, faithfully going by every Sunday on their way to Horse Creek are some of the other memories of Arnold. Rest in peace, you will be missed but fondly remembered as you join your beloved, Edna in your heavenly home.

Humbled in a Blizzard
When my Dad was a youth, he was skiing home from Horse Creek, following a roadbed, when he was caught in a terrible blizzard. At some point he saw some farm buildings and realized that they were on the wrong side of the road. He stopped and thought, realizing that the only reasonable explanation was that he had somehow gotten turned around. He told me that he had a terrible inner struggle, because was young and proud, to admit that he had made a mistake like that. Finally he turned and skied for all he was worth in the other direction. He was tempted to stop for shelter as he passed other farmsteads, but kept going and made it home. He took off his skies, went in the house and was standing by the furnace when my Grandpa came in and his glasses fogged up so he couldn't see, and he said to my Grandma: "Well we won't be looking for any boys tonight". (He meant that it would be no use to go out in the storm, they would not be able to find anyone.) Then his glasses cleared and he saw my Dad, and said, "Oh, you are here!" My Dad realized that if he had not been able to overcome his pride, he would have perished in that storm. My Dad told me this story during his last few months when we spent considerable time together talking and swapping yarns.

My memories of Arnold
My first memory of Arnold was when I was about five. Arnold's brother Martin(my grandpa) was having serious health issues at the time and Arnold and Earling had come to see him. Arnold and Earling came to my parents house and upon hearing that I was trying to catch a gopher, that was making holes in our empty lot, offered their assistance. Arnold showed me how to make a snare with some wire. Then he helped me plug up all of the holes but two with rocks. We then took the water hose and turned it on inside one of the holes and waited with the snare at the other hole. It didn't take long before the gopher came running out so fast that we couldn't catch him with the snare. All three of us chased that gopher all over the yard until Arnold's big boot caught him.
I've always thought very highly of Arnold. I looked up to him. I saw him as a cowboy and mighty hunter. Two things I've always wanted to be. I would always talk guns or hunting or even horses with him everytime I ever saw him. One year while hunting at his place for deer, I figured I would be well served to seek his advice as to where to find the biggest buck. He told me where he had seen the most big bucks in his years living there. A few days later I shot what is still my biggest buck right where he said to go.
At my wedding he gave me some advice. He said "For the first year, treat her like a bride, not like a wife."
I will miss Arnold but I know he is going to be with his lord and will be reunited with the love of his life.
