I have so many happy memories of the farm and time there.
I remember one of Garth’s first visits there and him falling in love with little Julie...right then & there we decided that she would be our flower girl at our wedding.
Auntie Helen & Uncle Herb truly practiced ‘open heart/open home’ and welcomed everyone that was in the area.
One memory that comes to mind is when while visiting them I noticed Uncle Herb wearing a t-shirt saying ‘I’m proud to be Ukrainian’ with Ukrainian spelt wrong & crossed out several times, all the way to the bottom and still spelt wrong.... I smiled and asked him “what’s up with that?” To which he replied “well, I’m Ukrainian...and so are you!” Which resulted in Garth laughing and saying “that explains a lot!” (I’d always teased Garth about him being a ‘mongrel’ while I was a ‘pure bred’ German)
Loved chatting with him....his delicious sense of humour and positive outlook on life.
Rest In Peace Uncle❤️, Julie is happy to meet you again.
Love ‘n Hugs to Auntie Helen, Barb, Tracey, Merna & families

My adventures in farming began with Uncle Herb when I was 12 years old. Our growing-up years had been spent overseas or at the far east or west coast of Canada and family life had been quite removed from farming.
On a very rare visit to Saskatchewan, Uncle Herb proposed a business deal to me, a then 12-year-old, and I felt very privileged. The offer was 25 cents for every Caragana bush planted to make a shelter break along the east side of the gravel road up to the farm yard. I was ecstatic about this. Not only was I given a special business deal, I was singled out by my uncle to get away from the adult visiting going on; how did he know?
Two years later my life was enriched again when I was given the opportunity now at 14 years old to spend the entire summer at the Domes’ home farm with grandparents Olga and Archie. The big bonus was that Uncle Herb and Aunt Helen lived at the adjoining farm. I was welcomed into both homes and my good Uncle Herb did not disappoint this time either. Daughter Barb was then grown and had moved away, Julie was 10, Tracey was 6 and Merna was a toddler. Aunt Helen had her hands full and I could fit in and fill that age gap. Uncle Herb cheerfully took on the job of showing a city slicker how to be a junior farm hand and cow poke.
My mother Irene was the sibling closest in age to Herb. She always adored her Herbie but was more than a little “amazed” at the things I did that summer. During her growing up years she had never been allowed to do any “man’s” work and that included being in the barn. Attending to big animals was out of the question. So, wasn’t she surprised to hear that I had participated that summer in rounding up cattle on horseback, castrating bull calves, looking after pink eye, driving a tractor, a dirt bike, and so on.
Driving a tractor (or anything else for that matter as a city kid) was to be but one of the memorable experiences Uncle Herb created for me that summer. He was famous for his big gardens, the bigger the better, and truly we were able to spend a whole day just on the potatoes with that tractor. That first run was a little hairy though with me having been conscripted to do the driving. Uncle Herb rode standing, hanging onto the back and dictated instructions as I tried to manage engaging and releasing the clutch, getting the tractor into gear and managing the gas pedal. Needless to say this operation involved a big wheelie ride for Uncle Herb with him yelling, “Holy moly, Inkie, you almost killed me!” A big laugh soon followed. I did get better and we managed to get the field work done that day. Other days he could return the favour with me riding passenger in his big truck, white knuckled, as he looked over the edges for cows in the coulees. This would be done without getting out of the truck to look over the edge, if you know what I mean. He had a lot of fun seeing my face and asking with an impish grin, “What’s wrong Inkie?” It was a summer I never forgot and I know it put me on the path to farming, including cows and horses later in my own life. Thanks Uncle Herb!
Sincerest condolences are sent to Helen, Barb, Tracey, Merna and family members. Aileen & Zbigniew

Herb & Heather Huber posted a condolence

First of all Heather & I want to extend our condolences to Aunt Helen, Barb, Tracy & Merna. Being the first born nephew of Herb Domes I inherited something else besides his first name, I like to share stories:
I was born 10 years after Herb Domes and started out life as Robert. When my mother placed that expensive long distance call to Verwood to announce my arrival Grandma Domes was not pleased with that name. My mother asked what other suggestions she might have. 10 year old Herb Domes, standing nearby, suggested I should be called Herb like him. So, thereafter to differentiate I was referred to as Little Herb & he Big Herb. When I was 5 years old I spent a summer holiday at my grandparents and had a ball. Their farm house was 3 stories high and in showing me around teenage Herb Domes described the clothes shoot that went from the second story down to the basement. We agreed that I could fit inside & that it could function as a slide. He then took me to the basement and made sure there was a goodly pile of clothes at the bottom. Up to the second story again and I was hoisted into it for the ride of my life! A much older Herb Domes always maintained that he would never have done something like that. I'll leave that up to folks who knew a younger version of Herb Domes to decide.
The barn on that homestead had what seemed like a gigantic hay loft - to a 5 year old, and on top the roof there was this little house affair with pigeons flying in and out. Teenage Herb Domes asked if I'd like to see a baby pigeon - of course I did. There was a rope that extended from the loft floor to a track near the roof which was used to move hay into the barn. He said he could climb that rope and toss a baby pigeon down for me to catch. Well, at 5 years of age my catching skills weren't to good. Suffice to say I still don't know what a baby pigeon should look like.
One night they were entertaining company and he and Grandma decided they'd train a 5 year old to be a waiter. They took me into the kitchen, showed me how to open the brown bottles and pour this adult brown pop in glasses on a tray, then deliver same to the adults in the sitting room. It went well and come my bed time I remember Big Herb laughingly saying "The little bugger is drunk, he'll probably pee my bed". I wasn't & I didn't. Okay, I did do some quality tasting. There's more but to wrap it up Uncle Herb will leave a hole in my heart.

I remember Herb as a tall man but a gentle giant in our community. Whenever I ran into him while out visiting my dad he would ask how things were and catch me up on his kids and grandkids. His family was his everything.
Sincere condolences to Helen, Barb, Tracy, Merna and their families. He will live on in your hearts and memories.
